A few weeks ago i noticed that when DD ate tomato sauce her face broke out in little red dots under her mouth, her cheeks turned red and she had spots covering her nose.
It goes away after a few hours, no noticeable swelling.
Today at lunch she had nuggets and sauce and again it happened and DP was with us. He said she just has a slight allergy/intolerance to a preservative and said she needs to build a tolerance.
Does that sound correct? Should we be offering it to her?
It could be a preservative that she is sensitive to, but it could also be the licopenes in the tomatoes. My youngest also broke out in a contact rash on his mouth or hands after he'd eaten any sort of tomato, so we excluded it from his diet for nearly a year and then slowly reintroduced it. Now he's fine with it, but to err on the side of caution I limit how much he eats. It was hard though because he loved tomatoes and ate grape tomatoes like lollies.
There are heaps of things in tomato sauce that could cause it.
I would withhold it if there's a reaction - what else is it doing to her, that you can't see? Kids do often grow out of these things, but I reckon it's best to wait.
I was worried as MIL is highly allergic to tomatos.
I think i will stop her eating it for a little while. She seems to be fine with tomatos and other tomato based foods though but will watch her.
Have a look into salicylates, they are naturally occurring in many foods, but also feature in tomato sauce, and a reaction to them is often a red rash.
DS used to break out around his mouth & eyes/cheeks when he had anything tomato based. Slightly if I ate tomato too. He dosn't get much tof it these days, since not breastfeeding (he's not a fan), but we haven't had a break out in a while. I'd avoid it til she's a bit older & have another go :)
