Problem resolved, thank you!
My DD went through a craze of this just before she turned 3. Now that she is 3 I have notice it lessening but I'm also trying to keep pants on her as she only does it when she's naked or at least her bottom half is naked...
So I'm quite interested in this thread!
Kids and their bits :dunno:
Ds1went through a phase of constantly pulling at his diddle. Like every 10 seconds. It lasted about 8 mths. Ds too is doing it now but he does it about once a min so it feels not so embarrassing.
I have had girls in my kindy class at themselves and the teachers ask that the parents dress them in trousers/leggings- u can pop a skirt over the top. It does seem to be worse with umm easy access.
Sorry no advise
Sorry if it doesn't make sense, the barefoot princess is covering me with kisses
You're right, it's very normal. Mine haven't done it quite that much but when ds went though his willy discovering faze we kept telling him it's for private. Make sure you tell her there isn't anything wrong with it though, just that it's meant to only be done in her bedroom. So every time you see her do it tell her she has to go somewhere private if she wants to do it. It eventually worked for ds, or he he just grew out of it! Maybe you could talk to your health nurse about different ideas too.
This is what I did also. When DD1 was little she would do it a lot but she would twist her legs around each other and tense them up and down to do it. I just always said that it's ok if she wants to do it but she has to go into her room because it's private - to start with she would always go to her room but after a little while she would choose to stay where we were and stop doing it. She used it mostly as a relaxing thing and before she went to sleep too.
One of mine was the same, could have written the same post! I have a photo of her on the trampoline asleep in the assumed position *rolls eyes* I remember at a party there were kids running around chasing each other and she decided to stop and lay on the floor and off she went.
They do grow out of it... Mostly.
Thanks all. I googled last night & freaked myself out (yeah, I know)... Dr Sears website mentioned that preoccupation with it might mean behavioural problems :(
I woke up at night thinking of her other issues - she finds it hard to play by herself for any length of time, really.
She does use the ipad a lot & watch tv because she is very "intense" - very active, a climber, a daredevil... All these things make me wonder if I have failed her. I don't always know how to handle her & I really hope this fixation isn't
linked to some kind of psychological problem:(
Becsuse the article mentioned that if they withdraw from people in order to masturbate, that is worrying... She does that at my mum's house - excited about going to her nana, but when she gets there, she gets down on the floor & starts.... :(
i'm sure its just a normal phase. however if you are worried then you might want to have a quick chat to a gp or other professional. :-)
If only I had more faith in the various GPs I've seen... might mention it at her 3 year appointment if it's still going on. (With the mchn I mean)
Please don't beat yourself up and think that you've done something that damaged her in some way. Of course you haven't. This is NORMAL and I'd say she's just developed a bit of habit because it calms her down. My dd for example will always twiddle a strand of hair in the same spot on her head for example, most of the time when she's trying to relax. This isn't any different to that really.
Thank you, Loulabelle. That does make sense. I think it is hard for her to relax - that is just her personality, she was definitely born this way! i.e. Very alert from the get-go, always beady-eyed & never had the "blank" look that most babies have, didn't sleep, still fights sleep right down to the last second before she drifts off.... She has a lot of energy which normally manifests itself in hair pulling (my hair, that is!) and strange violent shaking etc... :\ (We tell her to clap her hands to expend the extra energy!)
So this is her way of calming herself.... Makes sense to me now.
As of this morning I have spoken to her every time she started doing it - once she wanted to be put in her cot to do it, but the other times she stopped straight away because she wanted to sit on my lap, watch tv etc.
I think she has worked out it is actually pretty boring being stuck in her room - she's much rather be out in the living area with me.
So it is working! Thank you.
