27 month old dd and sleep issues

Hey all,

Has anyone started experiencing sleep issues around this age? Dd seems to be trying to cut out her nap and on top of that is waking up earlier and earlier in the morning. She has always slept 7 to 7 but is starting to wake up around 6. She is refusing day sleeps half the time and I have to fight her to go for a nap so,etimes for over an hour...only to get less than an hour sleep out of her. She definitely needs a day sleep still as she is soooo grumpy by 4pm and becomes so unmanageable. She is also not one of those kids that can goto bed later and then will sleep later in the morning, she will still wake at 7 even if I put her to bed at 10pm.

I am due to have another baby in 8 weeks and I am tired and over it :(

I dont really have any advice but they defiantly go through a stage when they need to sleep but dont want to have it. I think it depends on the child they all seem to go through this at different ages. Maybe just trying to get her to have a rest time might help. As for her waking early she seems to sleep well at night time so maybe you could put her into your bed to read or something so you can have some more rest.

I would give anything to have a 7 to 6 sleeper .... with or without day sleeps!

My sweet little man (he turned 2 in March) has decided that between the hours of 2.30am and 4.30am are great times to be awake. He then crashes until around 6am when he demands weetbix! We don't have problems with day sleeps. He will actually come up to us and say, bed, sleep... then walk down to his bedroom. At night we get him ready for bed at 7 and he's all tucked in by 7.30. Again, he has no problem with going to sleep. He gets his story, a cuddle and then lies down and goes to sleep. I've tried getting him to forgo the long day sleep or go to bed later and it makes no difference. If he happens to sleep through the 2.30am playtime he will be up and about by 5.

The only advice I can offer is .... this too shall pass!

Also, some days when we've been out and about and he might have had a doze in the car but nothing substantial and he's getting a little ratty and doesn't want to go to bed, I put a mattress in front of the telly and put on something quiet (like In the Night Garden) and he lays down with his pillow and blanket and he'll be asleep within 15 or so minutes.

DD1 started trying to drop the day sleep and was really stroppy. I ended up introducing quiet time on my bed with a book and she has to stay in there for at least 30 mins ( I show her this on the clock ie. when the big hand gets to?) and she ends up sleeping 90% of the time. She also has to be in bed by 7:30pm and is up at 6:30am every day. Good luck!

My son was similar. We decided to drop the day sleep and put him to bed a bit earlier. Sure he was a bit cranky from 4:30pm onwards for 6-8 weeks so we kind of just laid low in the afternoons. Stories, blocks or pottering around the garden worked a treat. Calming activities that weren't too stressful for him or so boring he would fall asleep. He was straight asleep at 6:30 and then wouldn't wake till his usual time either which was probably just luck. Perhaps give it a try for a few days and see how it goes. I felt so much better after we stopped the day sleeps as they were becoming such a stressful time and ending with us both in horrible moods for the rest of the day. You're lucky to have your little one just giving up day sleeps now! My DS1 stopped just prior to turning 2 and now DS2 refuses his day nap at 20 months and he gets crazy and passes out at 7pm.

Could you go for a drive so she can have a nap in the car? I sometimes resort to this if my DS2 gets too crazy and needs a little power nap to get him through.

Also as someone else mentioned quiet time if possible, both my DS like to watch tractor & train clips on you tube so I set them up and they will watch happily and most of the time quietly or peppa pig on DVD serves as quiet time too!
