Not sure how to handle this - new bed + new room

So we have moved into a new house about 4 months ago.

DS (3 years) finally has his own bedroom, he knows it is "his room" but I'm not sure he understands what this means.

We have also bought him a new bed, which we will get in a few weeks. This is the bed: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...72334959_n.jpg
As you can see it is quite high. Not as high as a bunk, but about chest height on me.

So how would you handle the transition?
Would you move him into the room first and let him get used to a new room and be around the bed during the day?
Or would you do it all in one hit and put him straight into the bed and room at the same time?

I'm worried either way he might "forget" in the middle of the night and fall out.
Any other suggestions on how to handle this?

would it be worth starting him on the mattress on the floor? Or even asking him when he's like to start sleeping in there and on what so he feels like its his decision too?? Sorry haven't been through this scenario myself. Would taking him shopping for a special set of bed linen help??

FL - He loves the bed, so I'm not worried about that, more so that he'll wake up and forget that he's in a different room in a higher bed. Itms? He's used to sleeping on a mattress on the floor of our bedroom.

you probably already do this, but I'd start doing things like getting him dressed and undressed in his room, put his name on the door etc and also talk about it being his room. if he has books before bed I'd put a chair in there and start reading to him in his room.

I think once the bed arrives it's up to you how you want to handle it and how best you think he'll respond eg I know with my ds there is no point trying to force him into something and we need to be patient while he adjusts to something new.

What's he been sleeping in? A regular bed? So it's just the height you are a bit worried about?

We are going to get something similar for DS when he is a bit bigger...

I'd let him play in it for a while to get used to the height and getting in and out. Can you set up his other bed somewhere in the new house, temporarily?

I think the height and the getting in/out will be the biggest adjustment and if he has a chance to get used to it before actually sleeping that might help.

OP - yeah the height mostly. He sleeps on a mattress next to our bed. Not sure about setting the mattress up somewhere else, we don't have any proper flooring in any of the other rooms. Will see what I can work out.

I could move his mattress to his new room but would that make it more likely that when he gets out of the new bed he'll forget that it's high because he's used to sleeping on a low bed in the same room?

Sorry I'm not articulating this very well. I know what I'm thinking makes sense but can't put it into words :wall:

I reckon set it up in his room in the morning, talk about it, spend time in his room, practise climbing up and down and pretending to sleep and wake up, and then ask him if he wants to sleep there that night.

We were expecting the adjustment to be hard when dd moved to her room, her new bed but the move went so smoothly and her sleep improved.

Id set it up and 'let 'im at it!' Honestly at 3 he's likely to be very capable at getting in and out, and would have to really move around to fall out over the rails already there. Having said that I'd definitely get him to practice and explain it would be dangerous and painful to play up there being silly in case he fell iykwim?? I understand where you're coming from though. We ended up having to put ds1 in a top bunk at around 2 1/2 and I freaked at first too but he was fine. Having said all that you could try get a higher bedrail thing to squeeze between the one already there and the mattress...

I agree wth HSM - let him at it. I worried about DS2 going from cot to bed. He climbed out of his cot one night so the next morning we put a bed in his room - he was only 18 months old. We put him to bed (in a bed) that night and he slept through without any issues - didn't seem to phase him in the slightest. We have also moved house since then, so it's a bit backward to what you've done, but he also adapted to the new room really well too. He loves to jump on his bed and climbs onto the bedhead - I've given up worrying about him falling and breaking something (a bone or something).

Love the bed by the way - I'm sure he'll love it too.

I'd just jump straight in. My DS went into a bed just before DD was born so about 25mo. He was so excited about the new bed. He played on it and couldn't wait to go to sleep. He has a side rail on his bed and he is often pressed up against it but he has never fallen out. Ask your DS and see what he wants to do. I'm sure at his age, he would have an opinion ;)

PS Maybe you have sorted it out already but I can see a link, not a pic, in your post. Cool choice of bed :)

OK, so we will do all the morning and bedtime stuff in his room from now on,
We pick up our sofa on Monday so we'll move our temporary lounge into the actual lounge room
and put his mattress in his room until we get his bed.
Set it up the night we get it - after he's gone to bed - and he can check it out in the morning and play with it a bit.

The only concern I have with this is that he'll get used to sleeping on the floor in his room and when he gets his big bed he will forget he's not on the floor anymore because the room looks the same. Am I being silly?

We're pretty stoked with the bed too, cant wait to get it!! :dance:

If it helps any, Liebling has a similar bed. Cabin beds with things that swing out are the coolest, you are a rockin' mama for getting your child that. (Yes, I have my childhood wish fulfilment via my son.) He had a sleepover in it with a friend. Both boys are wigglers. Although Liebs ended up in the spare bed (at his request) to get some sleep, neither fell out. It is hard to get out of it without climbing over the rail, so to remember to do that means you have to remember there's a rail - and that usually promps that you're high up. I find it better than a normal single bed when I crawl in with Liebs some nights as he can't push me out of bed, I end up waking up on the side rail but not having fallen onto the floor.

I go with the others, have fun with the bed and in his room and ask where he wants to sleep.
