I use the Fowlers Vacola kit. Got it from DH's Nan (it was hers from their farming days) I get the lids, rings, clips etc from Mitre 10. Supplies can be bought online, but for this I prefer to support a local business, so then it means there might be items in stock when I need them (I believe it is Fowlers philosophy as well). Have not had to buy bottles, as many came with the kit, plus some people pass on theirs when they know you use them.
For basics, like jams, relishs etc, I just use normal glass jars with the lids with the pop centres. You can get 3 uses out of those lids and you can purchase more online to match your jar sizes.
If you don't want to go to the whole expense of buying preserving jars etc, you can just recycle any jars you have at home with lids on them and use those - boil them to sterilise and then you just pop the original lid straight back on when you pour in the hot preserve and it will reseal itself and suck the top back down. Or you can just seal with with wax poured over the top of the preserve and then plastic over the top - my nan only ever does it that was and she has the best preserves for miles! I have posted a huge thread on here about preserving somewhere, I will have to find it.
thanks guys for all the tips.
Trillian I can't seem to find that thread, it might of been retired?
Sorry! I got totally distracted and never got back to this. There is one thread here that I posted in with some limited information about freezing vegies https://www.bellybelly.com.au/forums...-Fresh-Veggies and I will have a look now for the other one.
