DD's hearing test is tomorrow & I'm nervous!

We have been trying to have DD1's (she's 3.5yrs) hearing checked for weeks now but due to sickness & then the clinic cancelling on us we have had to reschedule a few times! So tomorrow we are finally going in and I'm nervous.
We've been a bit concerned about our little girl's ears as she does talk really loud for a little girl, she's always been a loud little thing ;) she's always been a loud screamer, and talks loudly but that is also in my family too. Like when playing she will always turn up the volume that bit too loud and we are always telling her to quieten down as it's almost always too loud unless of course she's outside we don't mind how loud she is!! but we're worried as she always says to us "what did you say?" and almost ALWAYS asks us to repeat ourselves, even when we have said things quite loud or close to her. It drives us crazy and we thought it was maybe a 3 year old thing but now we are just wanting to rule out the problem ear thing too.

So wish us luck..... hope nothing is wrong with her ears :(

Good luck! My son had his tested a couple months back (he was dx'd Aspergers) as be is always asking "what did you say?". The test itself is quick and really quite fun :-)

My son's hearing is fine, it is his auditory processing that is a bit "off", so he hears us but his brain takes a while to process what has been said etc.

Will be thinking of you. DS1 is the loudest talker and has no concept of quiet or inside voice. Everything he does is loud!!! I have just had his hearing tested and he has absolutely perfect hearing. Hope everything is ok with DD :)

How's her speech Shanti? Speech delay is a big indicator of hearing loss. Does she get ear infections? Hope everything goes well..

DD has a 50% hearing loss in her left ear (diagnosed at 3mos) and her last audio appt showed that both ears are full of fluid (and has been all her life) so we see an ENT next month to get some grommets sorted.

Hopefully that's all that your DD needs!

My dd 3.5 always says 'what did you say?' too, but I think it's often meant as 'what do you mean'?

Well my little angel was such a good little thing and did the test perfectly. I was so proud of her! The lady was really lovely with her. Her hearing seems fine, and she heard all of the sounds and responded really fast, but she said she has congested ears which are quite thick and it appears like it's been there for some time.
So we got referred to an ENT specialist to look at getting grommets in. My DH got grommets a few times as a kid and they kept falling out, apparently they fall out ALOT?

Anyway, we are going down the natural therapies path instead to try and clear out the congestion which could have been there for months even a year or more :( and today DD had her first appointment with my acupuncturist/kinesiologist..... she's also taking a few natural things so we'll see how it goes :)

I'm glad to hear her hearing seems normal.

BAL - she has EXCELLENT speech and language skills, from really early on and talks more like a 4-5 year old! so no probs there :) she's always been quite advanced in that area.

We are using cranial osteopathy to help clear congestion in DS ears and have used with DD too. It definitely helps and they see a lot of children with congestion in ears apparently sometimes it works and sometimes grommets are required. A lot is to do with the angle of the tubes and as they grow older the angle increases so ears drain better. As your DD is 3 right? You might find that once they clear the angle is now better to avoid recovering problems. I had grommets as a child but not till I was 4 so didn't fall out much but mum reckons I was probably over the issue more or less by time got grommets. Younger you are more likely they fall out and need repeating. DD has a friend who has had to have many pairs and the whole thing has not been satisfactory IMO so am trying to avoid with DS who also has some congestion.

i second the cranial osteopathy and also simple things like ear candling. we now treat all ear infections with the ear candles.

DD had very blocked ears a year ago which had been there for quite sometime and the specialist put her on a high dose antibiotics for a week and it cleared up with no further issues. So if the natural therapies don't work, that might be worth considering before surgery if your specialist is open to it.

Um, maybe I'm wrong, but aren't grommets supposed to fall out??!

DSD had them done when she was six, at ten now the surgeon has said if the second one doesn't fall out by next year she will have to have surgery to get it taken out... Your ear isn't supposed to have a permanent hole in it, it just helps the fiuid drain when they are prone to ear infections....


Maybe the problem us when they fall out too quickly???!

We did get told that she may need a second set if the hearing issues continued after the grommets came out.

In the meantime - you could also make sure she wear searplugs and a cap when swimming, particularly in public pools, and if there are any smokersaeoynd, make sure it's not in the house and preferably not around her at all.

Myturn - yep you're right, I didn't realise that. But from what I've read, it's the 'last' option to go with getting grommets because there are all these natural alternatives.... I don't like the idea of my little one under GA anyway.....

My DH needs some too as he has so many issues with ears :( we've been taking some homeopathic tablets seeing if that works, can't' remember name of them! Follow up appointment due next week with acupuncturist/kinesiologist.
