Giving panadol and then throwing up...give panadol again?

Hi all,

I gave my DS panadol and 20 minutes later he threw up (build up of mucus). Do you think he's brought up the medication and I give it to him again? It smelled like panadol (sorry TMI).

IMO I have never given it again unless it was thrown up within 5 mins of them taking it - after 20 mins I would be worried that most would have been digested even though you could smell it. How is he feeling? Is he ok to wait it out - if he is running a super super high fever and is miserable still I would call Nurse on Call and see what they say :hug:

Nope don't give it to him again as you can't be sure how much he's already absorbed and that goes for even vomiting immediately after.

Thanks ladies, I also think after 20 minutes most of it, if not all of it, would have been digested. He's feeling pretty miserable but temp is not sky high (we're off to the doc's soon anyway) so I'll give him some before bed if he needs it.

I've been advised by Dr's at the hospital that giving panadol orally can actually iritate the stomach and cause vomiting if kids are sick and that if that is the case to use panadol suppositories (??? spelling), same goes for Nurofen.

When my kids run a fever and are vomiting or diarrhea (or both), I try to avoid using panandol or nurofen if possible.

I hope your little man gets better very soon...

Thanks for that Tarhli, I think DS threw up because he's had that yucky mucus build up, but who knows maybe the panadol did irritate his tummy. I chose to give him the panadol as he was burning up and that usually brings his temp right back down.

The doc said the bumps were flea bites, but we don't have pets :o So me thinks maybe someone brought one over (my parents have 2 cats and my neighbour who comes over sometimes has a dog) or one jumped off the ducks that we feed regularly at a lake near us. Either way, I feel terrible that a flea is walking all over his wee body and sinking his teeth into my poor wee mite :( Plus he has been having a temp last night and today and a runny nose, so he's just feeling really sorry for himself right now... How are your two munchkins going?

Just in case it ever happens in the future again, you can give nurofen as well. Nurofen and Panadol are completely different drugs and can be used together, so if you give one and then the child vomits, you can give the other if you are worried they threw up the first drug.

We had a flea infestation this time 2 years ago and we live in an apartment, no pets and only moved in 6 months before the outbreak. After a bit of googling, I discovered they can lay dormant in the carpet as eggs for a few years. The usual time they come out again is in spring, the little buggers like the warmer weather. If you are relatively new to your place you could be suffering from a similar thing.
Interestingly, only my DH and DD1 were bitten. DD2 and I never had a problem. I actually didn't believe them at first because I saw no evidence of the fleas.
