3 kids in the one bedroom?

Am after some feedback on anyone who has had 3 kids in the same bedroom - did it work/didn't work? What were the drawbacks or positives?

Our kids will be nearly 9 (girl), 6 (boy) and 3 (girl). They get on really well together.

Our issue is that we have major sleeping problems and are outgrowing our house! DS and DD2 wake every night but when they sleep together they don't wake. We are exhausted and can't keep functioning this way. DD1 is very open to the idea of all sleeping together as she also likes to sleep with someone. Quite often in the mornings we will find 2 kids together in one bed.

We have a 4 x 2 house. We are thinking of making one room a sleeping room, one room a study and clothes room and the third a playroom? What are everybodies thoughts on this?

Any thoughts and feedback would be really helpful as if we do this we need to go and buy a bunk bed and do a lot of moving around so it is something we have to put a lot of thought into!

You can get triple bunk beds, they look pretty ace.
I think it is a fabulous idea! If they sleep better when together, then it's worth a try. Your 9 year old may start getting to the place where she wants some more privacy from her brother in a few years, which may be something you consider.

Honestly, I think if possible your older daughter should have her own space. She is approaching puberty which, as I am sure you know, is a confusing, sometimes embarrassing time. Having space - both physical and emotional - is important for girls this age IMO.

Sharing a room with younger siblings, especially the opposite sex, might not be the best for her.

I'd be tempted to have DD2 and DS share and let your eldest DD choose (with provision that when she wants 'out' she can). there are some really great blogs/websites that showcase some awesome three kids to a room ideas too BTW ;) (because eventually all our kidlets will be in the same room)

I agree with allowing your older DD to have her own room still.
Also, I have found that dedicated Playrooms are a bugger to keep tidy.
But My kids share & I have just recently moved the little ones cot into the younger 2's room, not that he sleeps in there though.

N2L - Totally understand your concerns. Would it "sit easier" for you if we said it may be a short term fix ie only for a year or so? We are hoping to move/build in the next year and then the storage concerns/running out of space problem would be solved.

Limeslice - last night I was up to all hours googling furniture - some of it is pretty cool!

Mine have always shared till this year. (9g, 7b, 2b.) They would still love to share. I say go for it.

Bellany - if you don't mind me asking what was your reason for them now no longer sharing? As your kids ages are similar to mine.

Just because we moved to a bigger house so we had all these spare rooms lol. The two older ones ask for sleep overs in each other's rooms often and they have only been separated for 2 weeks lol.
I think your eldest will let you know when they are in need of their own space.

Oh and we always have one room a play room. Helps sleeping if the bedroom is only used for bed and keeps things tidier

I have all boys, but they have shared a room on and off at different times. DS3 was taken out about a year ago as he was mucking around too much and keeping the other 2 awake, but of late they have all been sleeping in there again together. They love it! We will be extending at some point (3 bedroom, very small house) but will still give them the option of sharing rooms if they want. I almost always shared growing up, and I loved it. My 3 often sleep in the same bed, even though they each have their own.

We have 4 in the one bedroom ATM in two sets of bunks and have been this way since December. It's fine most of the time but when they fight or need some space it gets a bit hard. I let one of them at a time sit in my bedroom when I need to because this house is tiny and not many places to escape to.
After we renovate we will have to have 2 in a room, just haven't decided which two yet.

I agree with the oldest one issue, but you're the expert there ;) I shared a bedroom for years with my 3 sisters - 2 sets of bunks in one room, and all our clothes in the other! Worked fabulously, especially for my diabetic sister, whenever she had a bad low BSL and started seizing, there was always someone there to notice :)

if older daughter wants privacy, screens are a good idea. easy and movable

Well we did it! We moved all 3 yesterday into one room, they were so excited and it was a great incentive for them to clean up and go through all their toys, books etc! We have 2 king singles in the one room for now and they will share those beds for a couple of weeks. If it looks like it will work we will then go and buy a set of bunks to replace one of the beds.

So far so good, they all slept through last night!

Re the privacy of the eldest - she has already "claimed" her old room back which has their desks and clothes drawers in and is happy to have quiet time or get dressed in there. As it really has nothing of interest in it for the younger two that should work out.

Sounds great to me :) I agree that the oldest will soon let you know if she's hating it I'm sure! We will have our 3 in one room for a long while yet :)
