Prostate cancer - positive stories please!

My dad has been told today that he very likely has prostate cancer. He is having a biopsy on Monday to confirm it :cry: I am so close to my dad, the mere thought of him with cancer scares the hell out of me. Hopefully it's localised and in the very early stages as his PSA levels are still in the norm, just elevated but they had a 40% jump in 6 months. I just can't believe the time has come for one of my parents to be diagnosed with the dreaded C word :(

Please share any positive stories you may have about this. I'm so, so worried.

FIL just got diagnosed, and (I don't know full details) but they are taking an 'active survailance' approached.

They won't have to do any kind of treatment for years and years (possible 10 years)

My dad has had it and had treatment. He has the all clear and is going strong! Early detection and treatment generally means better outcomes. I hope he is ok :hug:

My fil has it. They removed some of the prostate for him. He's doing great. He has had some incontinence issues which are improving. They opted for surgical over radiation because radiation can destroy the cells to a point that if it doesn't work then you. Ant always operate.

I know this won't mean much right now, but for men, this is considered to be the best cancer to get. Many drs will leave it untreated for years because it isn't considered life threatening. Especially of there are no other detected.

My stepdad had prostate cancer 20 years ago and its been in remission with no signs of it returning. When he was diagnosed treatment was a lot more aggressive, with pretty serious side effects from a boy side of things ;-) My god father was recently diagnosed too, and his treatment was successful and without the, er, downside to go with it.

Like MG said, if you're a guy and you're going to get cancer, its definitely the one you want.

Good luck to you and your dad. However "good" things look, that C word is scary as hell.

My uncle had it several years ago, had the treatment and is going great guns now with it behind him. I believe it's one of those highly treatable cancers, especially because the antigen tests mean it can be picked up early. also FWIW there are other benign reasons why the blood tests can be elevated. But big hugs to you anyway, it can be really scary waiting to find out what is happening. I hope those results come back good for your dad.

My grandpa is 88 and was diagnosed in early September. The Dr's said its the least aggressive form of cancer and takes a long time to fully develop. Grandpa is being treated within hormone shots, and making sure his immune system is kept strong, already showing improvement and its only been a few weeks.
Dr's are pretty confident, just worried it would be his immune system that would let him down.
Hope your father recovers well and quickly.

I've already had a wine and it's only 4.45pm here :redface: I'm just pooping my pants. I know I'm getting SO far ahead of myself but life without my beautiful dad is simply unimaginable. But your stories give me hope. I'm trying so hard to think positive and realistically I know his chances are really good that all will be OK but it's just the thought of that damn word. It makes me feel sick. And my poor mum, who's sister had a mild stroke today (yep, awesome day), I should be a shoulder for her!! I was a blubbering mess when she phoned.

Will try to put my positive thinking hat on now. Now is not a good time to be an over thinker.

I know 3 older guys who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the last few years and they are all hale and hearty now.

My Dad was diagnosed about 5 years ago. He had treatment and is now perfectly fine and as we speak is somewhere in the jungles of Thailand. :hug:

My pop (mums dad) got diagnosed with it a couple of months back, had all the treatment and is now doing fine :) Fingers crossed all goes well for your dad :hug:

FIL and one of DH's uncles (cant remember which side of his family) had it a few years ago and both had minor surgery and are going well still

It's hit poor dad today. Mum is really flat too, understandably so. It was good to share some positive stories with mum though and hopefully I'll get to see dad later. How I'm supposed to keep my cool and be strong for him has got me buggered though, the water works will be switched on for sure. Sigh.

Dad just phoned. It's a low grade cancer, I guess we expected that. He's got to look at his options now being either surgery to remove the prostate or radiotherapy. Both have their pros and cons so the decision won't be easy. I'm not all that surprised that it is cancer, just a bit shocked that my dad has cancer. Thanks for keeping him in your thoughts. Now it's just the big decision on which path he takes.
