Any ideas what it could be????

Yesterday and today, DD hasn't been herself. I kept her home from childcare today as I wasn't sure if she'd be ok and it's harder to leave work once I'm already there than it is to get someone in first thing (I'm a teacher). Anyway, the only 'symptom' that was obvious today was a runny nose. She is also flat but doesn't have a temp or anything. Anyway, this afternoon she suddenly started crying and crying and throwing herself on the ground and didn't want to be touched or comforted (extremely unusual - usually she wants cuddles when upset). Something was obviously hurting her, but for the life of me I couldn't work out what - she's never been like that before. This lasted about 20 mins before the panadol I gave her I think kicked in and she was calmed with her dummy. I was almost in tears as I felt so helpless.

She's been ok the rest of the afternoon. She took a while to settle tonight but that's it. If it were to happen again I'd look at taking her to the doc, but I'm not really sure what I'd say "my child is crying and has a runny nose but has no temp.....?".

Anyway - do any of you have any possible suggestions on what could have been wrong? Obviously they'll just be wild guesses, but at least it'll give me something to look for if it happens again....

Oh no! Thanks for the heads up. She's had the vaccine.....I hope she doesn't still get it! (Funnily enough, I did check her for rashes and the like at the time)

That has crossed my mind too. The last time she had an infection (about a month ago) there were no signs at all. She was just not herself for about a week - no temp, no pulling at ears....if she stays like this ill def get her checked out in case it's another 'no signs infection'.

They can have sore ears before an infection really sets in and they get a temp. I know a few who've had no temp at all but turned out their ears were infected.

DD1 had Grommets put in last month. The surgeon said her ears were so bad it was like a mix of puss and a gluey like substance had filled her ears. She said she would have had multiple ear infections. Not once has DD1 ever actually complained of sore ears, just that the volume had turned down. I had never taken her to the doctors for an ear infection.
So in saying all that, my first thought would be an ear infection. I remember too when I had on a few years ago it was not so much my ear hurting, but more my head so it makes sense to me that a child may not pull at or hold their ear when there is something wrong. Just be generally upset because their head is hurting. Does that make sense?

Yeah mayby ears , they can still get chicken pox with vaccine just not as bad

Poor little darling :( a couple of things came to mind:

* Might have been a headache....that would explain the panadol releving the pain?
* She could be feeling hot, itchy and perhaps a little overtired? Sometimes this happens with DS and he throws a tantrum, like he just doesn't know what to do with himself?

Thanks for the info everyone. I actually feel like a bad Mum - I sent her to childcare this morning. I'm always so conflicted, when I'm not at work I feel guilty for not being there. When I send DD to childcare I feel guilty for sending her.

Anyway, she seemed ok this morning and, since I only had to teach for the first half of the day, thought I'd try my luck and see how she would go. I still haven't had a call, but I reckon that's cause they prob can't necessarily find a medical reason to send her home (temp for instance). I think I'll call in a minute and see how she is.

They said she's ok. A bit of a runny nose and a bit grumpy but ok.

2 year ones already??? She has her first lot....

Yeeeep.....some kids start early with their teeth. I spoke with a pediatric orthodontist and apparently the worst pain is when the teeth are moving around inside the gums before they cut. Aidan was acting really strange one day, sooky, crying and apparently that was the reason. So maybe they are moving around and ready to come through?
