Sorry mods if this is in the wrong place, I couldnt find any reviews for books.
We are struggling with our 3. The boys are great kids but we cant get them to do anything.
For years I have done my way and hubby does his way and we disagree with each other- probably why we are in this situation :rolleyes:
We get no help or support from family or friends and arent in a place to do any courses so I'd love to hear about the best parenting books you have read and or systems you use.
I'm hoping if I can get a book or "system" then hubby will be more open to trying something different.
I use star charts and have a reward based system.
He shouts and is inconsistent.
I would love us to be able to get on the same train with parenting.
I guess it could be worse, he could a dizzy tizzy hall zombie ;)
Have a look at the Positive Discipline books...Dr Jane Nelson I think it is.
Really very helpful and there is a book for each age group, and some others in the series too.
Although they are not about systems, The Science of Parenting and Beyond the Sling are the only two parenting books I own and I agree with most of their philosophy.
WRT parenting, how about you write down YOUR strategies, your DH writes down his, and then you discuss why you do them. You may say "I do not agree with that because" but you can't be rude about the other person's ideas. Would that help?
The Science of Parenting has been retitled 'What Every Parent Needs To Know' by Margot Sunderland. Also a big fan of PET (parent effectiveness training). You can do the course or read a book :)
I'm a big fan of PET - Parent Effectiveness Training. Totally changed the way I view my role as a parent and I've found it's approach great with my 3 year old. I also got DH to read it and he is on board with the approach too. Can't recommend it enough.
Really struggled with our Princess as well after two easy going boys. I have just purchased the Five Love Love Languages of Children. It's making sense to me as each of our kids have a trigger to their behaviour, I am working out hers.
It's by the same author that wrote The Five Love Languages. He has also written one for teenagers which I think I will need to invest in as well.
ETA: I will look Into the above mentioned. Need all the help I can get with our little girl.
Our favourite was heart to heart parenting by Robin Grille. Really good book by an Australian child psychologist.
