It's been a long time since I last got AF, so I cann't remember. But she has returned for the first time since I had the last baby (14mths ago). It is very heavy and has been for the past three days - but I realize that things can be a little out of wack when she returns. The thing that has me concerned is that I have has some blood clots, quite large ones, about the size of a fifty cent peice. I'm not sure if this is 'normal' or something I should be concerned about???
Boo to AF's return.
Mine was always sightly different each time my cycles returned after each of my kids. This time round I was a little concerned due to heavy bleeding & cramping I had not experienced before.
I would take a stab & say it is normal and just your body adjusting. BUT I do wonder if you have had your iron levels checked at all? I don't know if it could effect AF cycles but apparently low iron can effect the duration of the post natal bleeding. So I wonder if its possibly that low iron levels could mess with AF as well? Might be worth a bit of a full body work up just to make sure you are running at full performance. 4 kiddies can take its toll on your body so Im sure it couldn't hurt to just have a general check over :)
Hope things settle down for you. Nothing worse then heavy prolonged bleeding.
well, there you go.. A quick google would suggest that low iron can in fact cause lengthy heavy AF bleeding. I would pop along to your GP during the week & ask them to do a full blood body count. Also start on some iron supplements.
Also this may be of interest re the clots:
Check your hormones – too high estrogen or too low progesterone can cause heavy periods. I often see this in peri-menopausal women or women who do not ovulate regularly because their progesterone is very low. Elevated estrogen levels can also increase the amount of clots.
When do the clots appear? All the time or first thing in the morning?
