Nullarbor/SA sights to see

So we're off again :) Back across the Nullarbor, in the car, to NSW.

This time though, with my parents, so could be more, or less stressful :lol:

Not sure what route we're taking yet, except that we'll be definetly stopping to check out the Great Australian Bight properly, & possibly spending a night close by. Last time I jumped out, took some photo's, then got back in the car & showed the kids. So windy & we were on a deadline for time.

Is there anything else in particular anyone would suggest we see? We're not sure about NSW/Vic yet. We may go through Vic & head up to the Shearers Hall of Fame in Hay, or we may head the other way to Bourke & catch up with dad's family. So anything either way would be great :) What we don't do over can be done on the way back :)

Getting excited!!!

we did Canberra to Perth and back when I was nine. Things I remember that stood out (so things your kids might like) are:

Iron Knob ~ Not sure exactly where it is though, but near Iron Knob is a MASSIVE 'digasaur" basically a big earth mover, but I remember it being so big I could stand in the scoop. Thats if it is still there, if you want I'm sure I could find out exactly where it is.

There is an old telegraph station near Ceduna, we didn't get to see it cause we reached it in the dark and only dad was allowed out of the car to see it. although he only found the chimney... but there would be heaps of ruins etc.. along the way if you are into that sort of thing.

Big whale, and other such big things.

The Bite. we laid on the ground and looked down over the edge.

Kalgoorlie, we went panning for gold, and I remember a statue that had a face projected on it, it looked so real, was a man telling us about the gold fields.

Esperance!! was beautiful!! seaweed that looked like shreaded newspaper! and we climbed Frenchman's Peak, that was great.

and the highlight, that I really loved the best was the Gloucester Tree, in the Valley of Giants, its down south WA, near Albany. But we climbed it (was only sticks sticking out of the trunk then) and got to play in the tree house right at the very top. Really was amazing!! It's what stands out the most for me from the trip.

I'm sure I'll remember more, this is just want I remember off the top of my head now =)

We've been to Esperance & Albany a few times. Live about 3 hours from both, so looking for things past there :)

Went past Iron Knob on the way over. I'll look into it. I would love to go through Burra again to show mum & dad (near Iron Knob), such a beautiful place! Not sure we'll go that way again though. We went inland, mum & dad went coast on the way over.

I'm google earthing stuff now cause you have got me all nostalgic =P I found the "digasaur", its a electric mining shovel (if it is the same one I remember). but all the photos I can find have a fence around it =( We actually stood inside the scoop... mind you, this was 20 years ago (OMG...now I feel old =P). I'll keep picking my brain to think of stuff we loved (I was 9, brother was 7 and other brother was 4), so basically same as your kiddies.

I remember walking to the end of a jetty, that was like a KM long. but looking there appears to be a few long jettys...

Mum did make us keep diarys of our adventure, and she keeps saying she is going to pull them out. I'm going to their place later in the week if I remember I'll find it and have a read (cause I want to anyway). But that would actually have details in it =)

Could've been Esperance :) The jetty down there is pretty long, but it's missing a bit chunk in the middle, coz it was deemed unsafe... yet they left the end of it with no way to get there :lol: Think I read it was still attached in the 90's, but who knows :dunno:

so i looked in my book (didnt have much in there) but the jetty was at ceduna. and I forgot another amazing thing we saw - Wave Rock!! also in WA though. we didnt really do anything on the plain, just lots in WA and NSW either side of it. have you worked out where in NSW you are going yet?

We live 90k from wave rock :) and did ceduna on the way over. Got stuck there with a flat for 2 nights. That town left a bad taste in my mouth. Hoping to never have to stay there again :/
We're going home. Central west & mid north coast. Seeing all our friends & family. Already have too many things on our to do list there ;) zoo, big banana, camping, etc.

We leave in about 2 hours!!

****lebiddy cave? Probably fun for kids, I found it a bit lame. We camped there.
Telegraph station at Eucla.

There is so much nothing on the SA side, if you're going direct. Heading east-west we just gunned it across, coming back we went down the Eyre peninsula, only took us an extra three days or so.
