Hello Ladies!
So, I am in the middle of booking with Qantas for a flight from Melbourne to Devonport (tassie) return, and as I will be taking Miss H (5) and Miss Z (1) , I am needing to know if I am allowed to take Miss Z's Car seat for free? or does it come under excess baggage!
Hope someone has a quick answer for me!
I literally have the screen up typing in our names!

Children
Children receive the same baggage allowance as adults.
Children up to 12 years of age, are permitted one car seat and one collapsible pram, stroller or push chair in addition to the checked baggage allowance.
Infants
Adults accompanying infants are entitled to check in up to three infant items for each travelling infant. Infant items can include; collapsible stroller or push-chair, collapsible cot or bassinet; or car seat or baby capsule. Charges will apply for any baggage carried in addition to the checked baggage allowance and three infant items.
When we travelled overseas this year (with air nz) we were told that car seats, port a cots and prams, as well as a bag for bubs were all allowed, even though we only paid taxes for DDs flight as she was under 1. I got the impression from friends that this is standard for most airlines. I couldn't guarantee it though.
IF she is travelling as an infant, on your ticket, you can take it for free.
PLEASE!! I learned this the hard way :rofl: - Qantas charge extra baggage per ITEM - not per weight. So you can pay for an extra 23kg, but it has to be in one bag - they will charge you for any extra bags, costs a FORTUNE.
So CALL them and do it all over the phone to get definite answers on the number of pieces of luggage and any additional costs. It will cost $20 a piece for the first 2 pieces, then something like $40 for each piece thereafter. Totally illogical, so CALL and get it straight before you get to the airport.

We usually fly Virgin, but we have to fly into Launceston when we do that! And Launnie is a 2 and a bit hours drive from my parents place...So seeing as Qantas flies into Devonport, which is only about a 45 minute drive which, with the 2 kids, will be a lot less stressful!

With Air NZ we got charged for our carseat -as extra luggage but that was a few years ago.
So carseat or fold up stroller per child is free?
We flew Air NZ last year with an infant. We were allowed 23kg baggage each (including infant), carseat, stroller and portacot. 5 items in total and no excess baggage charges.
I've travelled qantas and virgin domestic with dd as an infant on my ticket and never had to pay extra for carseat, pram or portacot
Just remember that baggage allowances for infants are different internationally than domestic. You get a car seat, pram and portacot free on domestic but no normal baggage allowance as they have not paid for a ticket. Internationally you do get a baggage allowance (normally 10kgs) because you are paying 10% plus tax for an infant.
Yeah, I travelled domestic with DD3 & DS. DD's carseat was free, & if I'd known, I'd have taken the pram too!
Glad I flew Virgin though, coz they weigh it all together!
Ahhhhh yes ours was international flight.
If we can bring carseat/boosters and pram with us next time we travel that will help at the destination. Slight headache at the thought of dealing with it at the airport lol
