2yo and wearing glasses......

So DD, who is about 3 weeks shy of turning 2, has had to get glasses :(

i have no idea how to get her to keep them on, she needs to wear them full time.

her ophthalmologist has suggested "bribing" her, eg if she wants to use her play dough then she has to wear her glasses.. im ok with trying that but she is a very head strong and stubborn little poppet and if she doesnt want to do something she wont, no matter how i try to convince her.

im going to get her a rewards chart and try explaining that once she gets 3 stickers we will do something fun like go to the zoo or to feed the ducks rather than giving her something...

really im after any tips or stories, good or bad, of how you went getting your 2yo to wear their glasses because its quite daunting for me at the moment.

I think that once she realises how well she sees with them, she will want to wear them. You can get some very cool glasses for little girls, pretty pink ones, licensed ones if she is into something in particular.

You can get them with straps on so they don't fall down. Does she like to wear your sunglasses or play glasses? Make a game of it before hand and start playing and talking about glasses.

I don't have kids who have glasses, I have a daughter who is now 3 who wants to wear them even though she doesn't need to :lol: Both my husband and I wear glasses.

I worked in the industry for 10yrs and honestly, most of the kids were fine. Kids as young as teeny tiny babies to school age.

Ds got his just after he turned two, it has taken him a while but he now wears them most of the time, especially when we are out. Finding them is the hard part when he takes them off so we have encouraged him to put them on the bench. We did use jelly beans and stickers to help encourage him to keep them on in the beginning, he has accidentally bent the frames so we get them from specsavers with the free second pair.

Is she inclined toward 'big kid adoration'? My DD has started doing so many things she previously refused, just because she saw a cool big kid doing it. She still says (one year after the incident) " I LOVE cucumber... Zoe eats cucumber doesn't she Mum?"!!!

Do you know any older girls who wear glasses who can make it look cool?

That works too Santosha although ds wasn't fussed about dd1 it was when he noticed others at the shops or his fav carers wearing them that he would get excited.

DD1 has had glasses since she was twoish. It was hard in the beginning, but we started off wearing them when we read books, or watching a movie, I tried to make it something special so she felt special wearing them. Then we would go for longer periods of time. Yes I know they say wear them all the time but its about getting them used to such a new idea. We also talked about other eople we knew who wore glasses, and I got a play pair for her favourite toy as well.
Try not to fight with them about it so it doesnt turn into a negative in their day. Try to make it seem fun and special that they are luckier enough to wear glasses and whilst they are wearing them they get to do something fun. Now DD1 is 5, and wears her glasses always. Mind you we did go about a year without glasses because her sister broke them and our then dr said she didnt need them, but thats an enitrely different thread.

We got out a sticker book ( her fave thi g to do at the moment) and got her to wear them, and she realised if she took them off the stickers went and we got a good 10 minutes in of her wearing them, then we had a break.

After dinner she grabbed the case off the bench and asked for her "colours" (they are pink and purple so rather than glasses she calls them colours lol) and wore them for a good 15 minutes.

It's gone a lot better than I expected, but obviously tomorrow will be a whole new day being at child care.

My now 3 and a half year old got glasses at 18mo. I had a strap across the back so it wasn't easy to remove herself. I put them on and did something really distracting - going for a walk, going to the park etc.

I know many people are of the opinion that you should break in gently but for me, and my DD, I thought it was better to make it a rule that the glasses were on always.

a 2 year old at Spock's playgroup recently got glasses. His mum said he has never tried to take them off, basically because he can see, so likes wearing them.

so far she is doing 100 times better than i expected.

She has asked to wear them again this morning, and when she another little girl with glasses on at child care she was quite excited.

hopefully they are making a big enough difference that she is liking wearing them
