Professional Photo costs...

I went to view the photos today.... I had my info slightly wrong in the previous thread. I certainly DON"T have it wrong now!!!

So.... they do actually do prints.... 1 print that is 8x10.... $240!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not even on a canvas!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST A PRINT!!!!!!
The CHEAPEST canvas is $200 for a 8x10 canvas print. Prices then range up to $6k!!!!!!!!!!! OMG :o :o

She then tried to bully me into getting more prints. I knew we couldnt afford. Lucky I'm a stubborn person! She was rude, obnoxious and just a plain bully!
It came from a charity ball for god sake... he was making HUGE profit off anyone who wanted prints.

So... end story, I got one print of all 4 of us and that's it. I choose to forfiet the rest of the voucher. I can't afford to make up an difference in cost atm.

Good on you for standing your ground!!! That's is incredibly expensive!

Oh and if I was you I would contact the organiser of the ball to make sure they don't use then next year!!!

I just read the last thread and being a professional photographer, however I'm no longer a member of the AIPP (was in the past and win an award or two - not blowing my trumpet but trying to give background)
Some people think that because I might charge less, means I'm not as an experienced photographer etc. so those that charge a lot sometimes aren't good and sometimes they are brilliant.
Personally I think you should pay for the personalised style and personality of the person capturing your memories.
The actual cost of getting prints is expensive as are canvas's. So it does eat into the total figure earned.
It does sound a little high priced but if he is an established photographer then it could be justified.
Basically if a wedding photographer charges between $3-6k they really would actually make around $50 an hr after you take out travel costs, insurances, actual editing hours and you are paying for their 'style'
You can report or contact the AIPP - Australian institute of professional photographers and they will guide you if the photographer is a member, as to what you can do.
Part of being a member with them is having to prove your quality and service offered. This includes business practices.
Otherwise I hope your picture was with worth it memory wise.

I totally get that you pay for style etc etc. And he carried on about awards and stuff ( I had a look in the AIPP and I couldn't see him on there :dunno:).
I know it can be expensive, but then also, i f i think about what you can get from a wedding photographer for example - you can have them for the whole day, get a photo album, digital copies (if they do that), prints and/or canvases for the price that he is charging for one canvas. His comment was $150p/hr to edit the photos! hmm.... still sounds a little extravagent to me.

The other thing that annoyed me was this was donated to a charity event so he was fully expecting to make a huge profit off it.

I asked if it was possible to get thumbnails of the few photos I liked so that i could show it to family and see if they would like to purchase some. I even offered to buy the disc to put these on. Nope - not even an option, not even after explaining that our family don't live here and can't come in and view the photos. No digital copies, nothing.

I might ring AIPP and see what they say though. Not that it would make any difference because clearly, people are willing to pay $6K for one canvas.

Interesting that this photographer was listed with aipp but is no longer.... maybe i'm reading into too much or maybe people just like him so figure he can make whatever he wants.

My DH is a photographer and he charges $200 an hr for editing. Its a long proccess! He, how ever supplies the disc of all your pics on a CD, which is included in the over all price. His sister is also a photographer and he prints are $150 - $250 per print.

I am a professional photographer and whilst I do photography as a living... I also do it for the love of it! I have been a photographer for over 12 years ranging from newborn- weddings and all in between.
I believe in giving my clients what they want... Which is great quality for a reasonable price. I know people are struggling out there but know the importance of professional sessions.
My prices range from $30-> for prints but I tend to offer USB with high res digital images for $300->
I believe that good quality + great service = referrals which is priceless! You can't pay for that! If prefer to do 20 sessions at $500 each than 1 or 2 for $1000's+
That doesn't make me unprofessional... It just means I value my clients!

I recently had some photographs taken of my little beauties...
I was so impressed with the photographs. I LOVE THEM!!
Our photographer charged $200 which included a photo shoot for almost two hours. We met her at our local gardens and she simply followed us and snapped away.
We got a CD with all of the images. Lovely candid shots that really capture our children happy and playful. I highly recommend her.
