Low ovarian reserve / egg reserve?
Hi,
I have a history of endometriosis and ovarian cysts and after 8 unsuccessful cycles of falling pregnant, I was referred to see a FS back in March.
Well I saw the FS and he ran a whole heap of blood tests on me and DH and also did a sperm analysis for DH.
All of our test results came back normal except for one which was my AMH level which came back at a 6 instead of a 15-17 (for my age).
FS said that level was really low and wanted to start me on Clomid the very next cycle, but to our surprise I actually conceive that same cycle I saw him and so never needed to use the Clomid or go anywhere further with fertility testing, possible IVF etc.
My little boy was born 2.5 weeks ago and is perfect although I have a question.
We are considering having a 3rd child at some stage although with my ovarian /egg reserve so low, what would my chances be of conceiving again naturally and also, does a low ovarian / egg reserve mean the few eggs I might have left might be poor quality ones and could they mean I have a higher chance of having a baby with a birth defect etc?
Hoping someone can shed some light for me that may have been in a similar boat.
I'm seeing my OB/Gyn on 23 January for my postpartum checkup so will discuss all this with him too but just wanted some info in the meantime.
Thanks heaps. :)
Low ovarian reserve / egg reserve?
I had my AMH tested in 2009 or 2010 and my level was 7 at 27/28 years old.
From my understanding the quality of eggs can not be tested and therefore we can only be aware of the levels. For me it was an indicator of how long I have to have children. What I must do is have another test to see if its decreasing at a rapid or slow rate.
I found the test had a negative consequence for me as I panicked so much to have a child before it was too late.
My friend had a level less than 2 and decided to use IVF to have a child. She did have a small number of eggs when they extracted them, but it was enough for her baby and a frosty.
I think the key is to have a follow up test to indicate the rate of reduction. It may be a low number but enough to have the children you hope for.
Congratulations on your baby

Oddly enough my friend had hers tested and it was low so freaked out but still didn't want to try for 6 months got it tested again and it has gone up (confusing because you cant grow eggs) she then got pg after 3 cycles

Thanks ladies. I think my first step is going to be talking to my OB/Gyn when I have my postpartum checkup and then go from there depending on what he says. ;)
