Getting tubes done question

I've decided to go down the road of getting my tubes done.

Because I am well under 30, I know I will have trouble finding someone to do it.

I'm going to make an appointment with my OB to talk to him and make my case.

The risk of Gastroschisis is too high for me to risk another pregnancy, as well as a history of stillbirth (cord accidents)... Getting pregnant is going to be dangerous for my mental health, too. Which is fragile enough.

Our family is complete, I investigated the Mirena but I don't want it to affect my milk and I've found too many cases of it moving and causing pregnancy or issues.

Have you successfully convinced your Dr to let you have this done when you were under 30?

ETA: Vasectomy is completely out of the question.

Yes. If he won't, I'll be trying to find someone else to do it.

Darl I fed DD2 with the mirena in and it never affected my supply, maybe give it a try first

It will also cost thousands of dollars if you don't have full PHI.

Have you spoken to the consultant at the hospital who deals with high risk pregnancy (im assuming that you would be classed as high risk due to the gastro? Correct if I'm wrong!

You've got a better chance with an OB or consultant who has previously looked after you. No one else will touch you generally if you are under 30.

After our next one we will be having my tubes tied. It's risky for me also, for different reasons! (my body and pregnancy don't get along! Nearly killed us both last time!)

Drs will try and force the Mirena on you first or depo provera or any other contraceptive. It's a big decision to make. And if you want it done I hope you can find someone willing to do it. Good luck.

I have not had any personal experience with this issue, but I have heard of several women that have had this done prior to turning 30. So it is possible. (Although neither of them were in Australia.)
I would recommend talking to your doctor and going from there, e.g. getting referrals to specialists. It will probably take quite a long time and you'll have to have counselling and stuff, as it is a major thing to do, but if it really is the right thing for both your physical and mental health, then you should be able to get it done. Everyone is different, so just because this is probably not the right thing for a majority of women your age doesn't mean that it's not right for you.

I got mine done at 26. Many drs were shocked that I was done at that age. And at 30, my marriage broke down and at 31 I had it reversed (unsuccessfully).

There is a very good reason why they don't let you do it at that age. It's because the reproductive urge in women can be very strong, and in your 20s, you still have LOTS of life ahead of you, even if you don't seen to believe it possible right now. Your circumstances change, your mentality changes, you will not be the same person at 30 that you were at 20, or even 25. I did not imagine myself with 4 kids in my 20s. I now have 4 and would have had more if I could have.

There are LOTS of ways to prevent pregnancy. I know you don't want to hear it right now but I would hate not to say anything and have you go through what I did. How many times in your life have you made a decision that you were SURE you would never regret but then regretted? Coz this would be a BIG one if you suddenly feel that niggling urge in 10 years when you're making more money, or when the medical world catches up to being able to help with your condition, or your kids grow up and away, or a MILLION different ways your life will change that may make you change your mind and long for another child.

I agree, it will more than likely be a challenge, and may be a log journey to getting it done because of your age, but if its the right thing to do then yes Im sure it can be done. Goodluck :)
But I would also be having a chat with your dr about any other options you could try in the meantime.

A friend of mine who is in her mid twenties has tried for years to get this done to no avail. In general doctors won't even begin the discussion until the mirena has been tried. I had it when breastfeeding my twins and it caused no supply issues if that helps.

For me personally I asked for a hysterectomy at 26 to prevent further pregnancies because I didn't trust anything else and unsurprisingly they said no. DH then asked for a vasectomy and he had to persuade them as he was only 33. They agreed but only because we have 4 children. I think you might have quite a fight on your hands to get this done.

There is no cure or prevention for Gastroschisis. I'm so sick of seeing kids dying on the support pages, or the possibility that DD needs more surgery. And watching her struggle and getting sicker everyday at the moment while we wait for more appointments in Melbourne. I'm not going to put another kid through that. We nearly didn't have DS. And, honestly, I love him to bits but there are many days where I know we shouldn't have.
Regardless if I stay with DH or not, I won't be having any more children.

Anyway.... I'm not going to defend my decisions anymore. My appt is made now.

Statistically, mirena is more successful in preventing pregnancy than tubal ligation. (Interesting fact I just learned :lol:)

I don't think deleting this thread would be particularly helpful. You're not the first woman who has pondered this issue and you won't be the last. You've been given some great advice and thoughts to consider and I doubt you will get a different response from your doctor so it's worth being prepared. I would be interested in your doctor's response.
