Job interview - what to wear?

I have an interview coming up next week for a job as a research assistant. I was thinking of wearing a floral dress (which comes slightly above my knee), plain cardigan and black tights with flat shoes. This will cover all my tattoos whilst still looking nice and slightly more standoutish than the normal white blouse and smart pants/skirt look but now I am thinking maybe an above the knee dress might be too casual. Thoughts? I have a below the knee dress I could wear which is quite smart but not as nice or I could buy something new. I haven't had an interview in 9 years :lol: and back then I just went with a suit and shirt so this is all new to me.

I've just realised I had a job interview last year but the trousers I wore to it risk being too snug with my post Christmas padding :banghead: so I can't wear that and feel comfortable

I like the idea of the floral dress, plain cardigan and black tights. I would add a wedge heel rather than flat though. A nice top under the cardigan in case it is hot weather, one that doesn't show if you are hot (I perspire under my arms and find it embarrassing). If it is hot, perhaps footless leggings with a nice wedge sandal even.

A top from Metallicus would go nicely with a floral dress..they are light to wear, versatile and last a long time. Then if it is hot, you don't need the cardigan. The Metallicus tops come long sleeve and are comfortable to wear in summer. They are also a one size fit all stretchy material that allow for 'those' days :D

ETA: Dress...still could add a top rather than cardigan maybe over top, depends on cut of dress???

Thanks H, I have a large tattoo on my foot and lower leg so would rather avoid sandals but I think you're right about a wedge heel instead of flat. The dress doesn't really look right with a top under though, do you think it would look weird me wearing a 3/4 sleeve cardigan in summer?

No definitely not, I think it would look perfect. I was going to ask if you had any ink on your arms that would not be covered by 3/4 sleeve cardigan or one of those that come in between your elbow and shoulder in arm length.

Sounds good to me Traveller. I think a cardigan in summer is fine - plenty of places have airconditioning that is just nuts so cardigans or jackets inside can be pretty mandatory. Good luck

They told me I would hear "early next week" about the job. It is now after 5pm on Monday and I haven't heard. I know they were only interviewing Thursday/Friday last week.


Is the fact I haven't heard back

a) a good thing, they are letting the unsuccessful applicants know first
b) a good thing, they haven't written me off and are still deciding
c) a bad thing, my unsuccessful letter is in the post and they are only calling the successful applicants
d) nothing at all, I am overthinking this and Tuesday is still early in the week. They might not have made up their mind yet

:lol: thanks H, I am not patient in situations like this! Worse case scenario I don't get the job and I can offer to volunteer with them instead so I don't know why I'm worried.

I think you should be fine, if they interviewed late last week they would have sat down and discussed all the applicants at some point today, may not have been until this afternoon..... who knows?

I would say Tuesday is still early next week and if they said they would call, they may well do with a decision either way!

Fingers crossed you get the answer you want tomorrow (if not I would say wed may also just squeeze into the early part of the week :D)

In my experience it could take until Wednesday or Thursday for them to get back to you- just the way it is sometimes, esp if they need to discuss several applicants before deciding.

I would say (d). Most ppl are just coming back from holidays etc. so approvals/confirmation will prob take a few ppl to go through, ppl catching up on stuff. So don't worry. :)
