Coughing but no cold.

DD2 currently has a cough, it's wet but not yet at that chunky wet stage :sick:
It's the third time in around 4 months she's had this cough, all three have appeared out of nowhere, no cold etc.... The first time it was extremely close to being pneumonia, second time I took her sooner, result was chest infection. I haven't taken her to dr yet as I don't think it's at that stage yet, plus I really want to avoid ab's due o the huge amount she's been on over the years.
My question is,....is there any reason for these coughs?? I've always assumed coughs started from colds :redface:

You can get it from an infection, not just a cold. Maybe she has something making her more susceptible to chest infections? Asthma, hayfever, allergies etc. I don't know, just throwing ideas out there

Does she have a lot of dairy? My MIL gets a bad cough if she has too much milk/cream. It increases mucous and is also an immune depressant.

Or, maybe the infection hasnt been completely gone in the past so keeps coming back?

Is it smokey where you are? Perhaps that is contributing.

It might be asthma. DD started with random coughing at around 3.5 yrs (it is like an irritating cough with no cold/runny nose) and it came and went and after 12 months or so it always turned into bronchitis. Doctor diagnosed viral-induced asthma and now if we give ventolin at first sign of cough we can avoid going down the bronchitis path (that's only been the last 6 months so not sure what next winter will bring which is her worst season for cough/asthma). Seems my DS has it too as random cough has started for him and a couple of puffs of ventolin helps. Definitely ask your GP if your worried.

Also like calluna said cutting back on dairy can help, we noticed a big difference in DD by cutting back milk and yoghurt.

With boytwin this was one of the signs that he was allergic to dairy, it could be worth cutting down on milk and see if this improves things for her.

As Lis mentioned it could be asthma babe, Iz used to get "asthmatic tendencies" with any slight cold/cough - she had a cough that last 14 weeks once. We have a ventolin and spacer to help ease it - especially at night, although she has outgrown it now. Might be worth getting checked out. (Avoiding dairy has helped us too in the middle of it)

We get the same thing with DS. I'm still trying to work it all out. It has gotten worse every year. He is nearly 6 and is now on a preventer. He had a cough for 10 weeks. He has allergies as well so he does sneeze a lot which makes it harder to work out asthma. He got to the point that he had little energy and was affecting his behaviour. So my advice would be to keep on top of it. I was reluctant to go down the medicine path but it was unavoidable.

DS is also allergic to dairy. It started off quite mild and it is quite full on now. I'm trying to eliminate but it is very hard when he is out with friends etc and there isnt an alternative. However I've seen an improvement already.

DD has hardly any dairy, only drinks oat milk so can rule that out...
DH spoke with our GP yesterday and she suggeste antihistamine or Ventolin which we have, gave clratyne yesterday.
I'm also concerned we my be heating done the asthma path :( :doh:
I feel like we get one thing sorted and another thing pops up with her :(

I am in the same boat as sangie when my kids get that cough its usually asthma related and they need a few treatments of ventolin to clear it up rather then ab's.
