Enormous, random egg sized lump on DS1 (2yo's) neck?

DS1 has suddenly acquired an enormous, egg sized lump on his neck, just under the jaw line on the left.

No apparent fall or crash or bump, no sign of bite, no fever, no difference in behaviour, breathing, eating, drinking, weeing, pooing, requesting of Mike the Night or anything.

Completely bizzare, and rather sudden.

The lump is painful, and a little red. Possibly a little bruising, but can't be sure.

He is immunised (so shouldn't be mumps).

We're waiting for the Dr, but I'm trying to stop myself from Dr Googling too much :cry:

Any ideas? Any experience?

I wouldn't speculate :) I'm hoping you find out very soon and can stop worrying! It's never fun waiting for doctors opinion!

My son had this before was a swollen lymph node sp? Think he did anti biotics aswell. Was very random but was a big lump was size of a golf ball. Good luck at the gp

Under his ear almost? I have one ATM and I'm certain it's a swollen lymph node like the PPs have said. It's not causing any obstruction of breathing or swallowing is it?

No issues swallowing.

A couple of centimetres under his ear.

Might be lymph nodes.

When I was in high school I had a random lump appear on my neck. Dr ending up lancing it and (TMI) it was full of puss! Pretty sure from memory it was a blocked lymph node. Recovered fine and I don't think I even have a scar anymore from the lancing. Mum was grossed out watching it get cut open - luckily I couldn't see it myself!

My DD 1 had something similar to this happen to her when she was almost 3. She spent almost a week in hospital as they tried to work out what was wrong. She had numerous tests done including testing for tuberculosis. In the end it worked out to be an infection from a bee sting she'd received a week or so previously. The infection had gone into her Lymph node. She had IV anti biotics and was fine. Lymph nodes can inflame before or after basic illnesses too, such as colds & flus.
I hope everything is fine for your little one.

Dr is sending us to paed and for ultrasound and maybe biopsy :(

No idea what time the scan will be, and I've had to go to work because I've got a meeting that can't be rescheduled. Poor DH has to do all this with two little boys in tow ...

So:-

Step 1 - local GP as a walk in (we'll be seen quicker) to get the referral for the paed the Dr who came out last night - well, this morning, at 2am - doesn't know any local paeds. Also ask for referral for ultrasound and biopsy while there.

Step 2 - make urgent appointment with paed. If can't get appointment just go to hospital.

Step 3 - if can get appointment today, then juggle that appointment with ultrasound and biopsy to get all 3 done asap.

Step 4 - when at paed, make sure to make follow up appointment asap to get results.

Step 5 - a stiff drink.

Wow, that sounds scary PN. Hope he's ok.

I had a very similar experience in December, even down to having to go into work.

Thankfully D,s was a lymph node that was up due to teething but I have honestly never been so scared in my life.

I hope you have the same outcome.
