Lice - should I assume that he has them?

Took DS1 over to the neighbours for a play this afternoon, while I was there my neighbour was looking at her DS1's head, and then started pulling out eggs & lice, whilst making a passing comment that it had been over a month. The 3 boys were in together building lego, I'm going to assume that they're pretty close to each other, and the chance for a transfer is pretty high. He still co-sleeps with me, & his little brother, so if he has picked some up, they're going to transfer easily through the rest of us, and I definitely don't want to be dealing with having them myself.

So, should I treat him as soon as he walks through the door? Where do I even start? Send DH to a chemist for a fine comb & some cheap conditioner? Help :)

I have just been through the whole headlice thing and it is horrible..

If anything has crossed over, it would be the live ones, so I would be getting a treatment for them, and then retreating in a week's time in case they have had a chance to lay eggs which hatch after 7-10 days...

I would do a conditioner treatment tonight (wet his hair and later it in white conditioner and use a metal nit comb through it and wipe it onto a white cloth) to see if he has any nits or eggs, and if he does, treat it; if not, do the same thing with the conditioner every 3-4 days for a few weeks, just to make sure he stays nit-free.
We just went through the whole lice debacle too, my niece had it and we weren't told until after my children had been playing with her for over a week (we were staying with them) and had gotten it off her. It has taken me almost a month to get them all nit free. FINALLY!!!
