I need ideas for a special toy to get DS for his hospital stay when he has his surgery in a couple of weeks. I'd like it to be something he can play with in bed. I was thinking some kind of 'laptop' or something like that. But not too expensive........ I am strapped!
Any good ideas?

I never thought of ebay or gumtree... great idea! He's only 2 though, I wonder how much enjoyment he'd get from something so advanced.
I think at that age the attention might not last very long for a gadget. I would be more inclined to buy a lot of sticker books, colouring in books puzzles ect. When my DD1 had surgery last year that is what she liked. The hospital also had stuff there so check with them and see what they have available too. Portable DVD players are good too if you don't have one maybe you could borrow one from somewhere.
What about a second hand iPod filled with fun apps? Not sure how cheap you could pick one up though but my DD is 2 and its our saving grace when we need to do grocery shopping or go on a long car trip.
my dd is almost 3 and cant really do anything with the kiddy computer. the cheaper ones tend to be more complicated too, so i would tend towards something else. maybe check out some apps for your mobile if you want something technological.
a music box could be cool if you wanted a special, keeping type of gift.
for doing things, a magna doodle or some hand puppets, balloons, bubbles

I already have a lot of that stuff actually. I think I'll take the magna doodle, and let him use some of the fun apps on my phone. I've got bubbles, and today we bought him a variation of a magna doodle which lights up all pretty and neon when you draw on it.. so pretty cool. He just doesn't have the skills or attention span for something more intense like a DS or ipod though. But that's good because they cost so much. :)
I like the sticker books idea too.

what about a leap pad? im sure he would love sitting in bed playing with that
DS (2) loves his ipad, it could keep him entertained for hours. If you can find a cheap 2nd hand one it's a winner for sure.

Cherished - I really don't have a lot of money to spend. If anyone's getting an IPAD it's me :rofl: . I have a galaxy tab, he can play with that I suppose.
How about going to a Build-A-Bear workshop (don't know if there's one around you) and the two of you can build a special bear to look after him and keep him company while he's there? I'm pretty sure you could even make him a doctor bear, that would be cute. I have no idea what the price is though.
The cheapest bear is $15 and a dr suit would be about $25. Sounds (there's diff ones and you can also record your own) are $5. Dd1 just had a party there.
What about something as simple as a helium balloon tied to his bed? Honestly, depending on what he's having done and the meds he's on, he might not be up for more than stories and DVDs. The hosp will have toys on the ward as well.
Maybe some brand new special pencils/crayons and a new coloring in book?

My two also love me blowing up a ballon and then letting it go before i tie it. They would be happy to do this over and over if i didn't get bored of it.
Don't forgot something for you to read too, and some nice snacks. DS might sleep abit too.

I was thinking about the Dr or patient teddies. Normally the nurses and Dr can show him what they are going to do on the teddy. And most would let him keep it until he's under and then give it back when he wakes up. Just a thought.
The teddy is a good idea. Our hospital actually give all kids a teddy and DD1 loves hers still.
Definitely love the teddy idea! A leap pad would be good too, I'm looking at these for DS2's second birthday.
