I am going sugar and wheat free and trying to drastically reduce dairy. I have found them helpful.

Eta - I have done a lot of research and the best sugar subs (in terms of health) are 100% maple syrup, rice bran syrup, stevia (which I personally don't like) and coconut sugar.
Thanks. Im the same with stevia I just can't get over the taste.
I have stocked up on coconut sugar for the kids though.
How expensive are those sugar substitutes. I want to go sugar free too but it is overwhelming how much sugar is in everything. I don't know if I can afford to buy all those substitutes!
Coconut sugar I think is about 12/per kg.
I think the big thing is to cut right down on subs too so you wont need much as a replacement.

I agree NTL about maple syrup, it's gotta be the pure stuff. I've been sugarfree( except for the occasional bite of birthday cake) for about 10years because sugar doesn't agree with me but I can tolerate maple syrup very well. After a while your taste buds adjust to having less sugar in your diet.
Agave's pretty good too.
I am sugar free and was dairy free for a while too. We just stopped any form of sugar and left it out of normal recipes. Obviously you can't bake though which is strange at first, but the after two years of sugar free I don't even see baked goods as food.
The faster you stop thinking in terms of sweet, the easier it is, so I didn't try other sugars, just cut out sweet things entirely (even fruit). You will find raw nuts taste sweet when you don't eat anything else sweet, and a range of bitter flavours are more palatable (lettuce for eg).
I now eat butter, but I used to live on homemade hommus and corn crackers or avocado or boiled eggs for snacks.
I've been making dd snacks with a date base. Still sugar, I know, but they have nutritive value.
