I am keen on using sign language with DD2, who has Down Syndrome, as I've read it helps with their cognitive and language development. I did a quick search on google and it came up with too many sites to choose from. I couldn't even work out if one was an official auslan page or not.
Anyone know the best source? I want it to be auslan based as then kindy can reinforce it.
I've only really heard of Tiny Talk which is a baby sign language (but not Auslan), you're best bet would probably be to get in contact with the local Deaf Society who would probably be able to help recommend something.
I was also going to suggest your state deaf society. Otherwise google Deaf Children Australia. My mum is President of Deaf Australia, the peak advocacy body in Australia for Deaf people. If you let me know what state you are in I can suss out some contacts.
I did invest in a set with DD1 but found that I ended up going with the Auslan website to guide us in the end so I would avoid the expense. (The Auslan website is excellent, with a video dictionary of all the sign words)
Also, look into Makaton. It is a sign language especially designed for special needs kids and kids in general as the signs are simple enough for children with simple motor skills to manage. I believe Makaton is used in education also, I know my mother who was a Kindergarten teacher used it with her Downs Syndrome and autistic children.
I managed to find a copy of the Makaton sign book at our local library which was excellent.
Whilst it doesn't take the place of an official course, I downloaded the Baby Sign app on my ipad. I think there are some free signs to see what the program looks like and then you can buy additional Auslan signs and also Amercian and British language signs.
My 1 year old loves looking at the cartoon babies who sign, but I wouldn't say he picks up much from watching them do it, it's only the signs I have integrated into our life that he remembers and uses.
Google 'sign planet auslan' and you should come up with the official Auslan website. There are a few imitators out there who seem to suggest that they are teaching Auslan, but actually it's not... but I also agree with jackrose - look into Makaton, because it might be that in the longer term this is a better set of signs to use. Maybe talk to your CHN or paediatrician about which might be a better option for your bub.
