Does anyone know anything about carpet?
I'm looking for very durable, cheap carpet.
I had a guy come out to measure and quote today- he only bought expensive types of carpet that I'm not interested in.
Any ideas of types of carpet I should be looking for?
I need something to get me through as this carpet is disgusting!
I dont know much about carpet We got our carpet (4 years ago now mind you) we just went to Harvey Norman to check out the range. After much contemplation we went for a cheap carpet but the underlay we got was very thick, so while our carpet is short (which made it easy to clean up DS tt accidents) it's actually very springy. That's my advice, get a nice thick underlay :)

I'm interested in this too! We need replace the carpet in three bedrooms, it's very cheap and rough and feels awful. We don't want to spend heaps but don't want to end up with the same crappy quality.
We went into andersons and stood on all their samples. And that's how we choose ours. We picked one that was cheaper than others that felt less nice. We didn't buy the absolute cheapest available but we weren't far off. It was on sale at the time. We also went for a better quality underlay as KittyK said, it made a real difference to the feel. The store had samples of different types so we were able to try them all out. We didn't have kids at the time so we had plenty of time to try them out without stopping toddlers from destroying the shop though.
For our bedrooms we've got the carpet that's nicknamed "party carpet". You can literally clean it with bleach which for kids' rooms is just brilliant. Its soft, good colour range and wasn't too pricey. There are different levels of underlay so you can possibly save a bit there.
Try to find a carpet seconds factory near you. They usually have end of run carpet or stuff that might have a small blemish that you can hide. I carpeted my large bedroom for $130 in a lovely carpet that had a mark which came out with steam cleaning. Doesn't match the rest of the house but you can't tell unless you look really closely.
Em go to Carpet Connection in Thomastown. They have off cuts and discontinued lines - we got a gorgeous wool carpet from there for the same price as a nylon one was going to be from our local fancy carpet place. Wool carpet wears really well and is easy to clean. The guy was really knowledgeable and helpful and because they are discontinued lines they are cheaper ;)
Always get good underlay, it makes a massive difference. As for carpet, unless you are willing to spend big then they are all pretty crappy. Get good underlay and you won't notice the difference. Plus you can change the carpet and leave the underlay if the kids wreck it. Just choose one that feels nice and is the colour you want.

Yes they lay it for you.
You can save some cash if you remove and dispose of the old carpet yourself - otherwise they charge to rip up and take away the old stuff.
Nope don't need to take your own measurements - most places come and do a measure and quote.
We already had our measurements as we got the local people through first, so we knew how many square meters we needed. However DH says that they will probably do a measure and quote. If you know how many rooms and spaces you want to fit, they should be able to give you a rough idea, then they'll do a measure for you.
Give them a ring and ask.

I've just had new carpet layed yesterday! I too started with el cheapo stuff and I regretted it for 10 years - you get what you pay for. I love my soft, thick not so cheapo carpet now!
