I'm really not mole-obsessed, I promise, however... ?

Given my European heritage and natural predisposition for moles, and where we live (with more sunshine than the sunshine coast!), I am a little concerned. I still haven't taken DS to the gp about his cheek, but he will be going next week. My new concern is Mack. He has, what looks like a pimple, on his cheek, in almost exactly the same place as DS' mole. His mole started off the same way. Can you tell if a spot is going to develop into a mole? Is there anything you can do to prevent it? Thanks, I feel dumb asking though.

From experience I'd say if it's genetic then it will become a mole no matter how little sun that part of the skin gets. I have a lot of moles on my body and while yes, many of them appeared over time and with age, a lot of them came along when I was a child and in are virtually sun-free places like between my toes and on the small of my back. My dermatologist once said that people with a hereditary pre-disposition to moles are like that because of a genetic quirk which results in the body localising melanin to little clusters - hence the darkened moles.

That's interesting, Ladylove! My DS1 has a mole in an area that never sees the sun and I often wondered why?? We get it checked out once per year, and so far it's all good. Been there since he was around 2.

I've got a few on my belly, back, shoulders. I've had them for as long as I can remember.

Places that never saw the sun. Hell, I've even got one on my vagina :)

I took both kids to get checked when mum was diagnosed with melanoma in jan. whilst the dr was having a giggle I was coming in with a 2 & 4 yr old to be checked, he did it for me no issues
