fatty liver issue
hey
Im very new here, was trolling through and hoping to get some help/advice from women who might have experienced this.
I am currently 21 weeks pregnant with my first child. I was taken to the hospital on Monday night with severe abdominal pains, vomiting and diarrhoea (sorry for the TMI). They did an ultrasound on me and found that I have an extremely enlarged liver and slightly enlarged spleen, which they called it hepatosplenomegaly.
They dont know what is causing it and cant confirm if it is bub causing it, but they did let me go after 24 hours with instructions to return immediately if the pain comes back.
i have since had some pains, nothing as severe as monday night, but have also continued to have nausea and the diarrhoea.
So basically my question is has anyone else had anything like this during their pregnancy? Do you know what caused it and did it get any better?

Hi, and welcome to bb. :)
I haven't had this problem, but I just wanted to say, if it's a standard hospital you went to, not a maternity hospital, it might be a good idea to contact your care team (midwife/GP/obstetrician, whoever is your main carer for your pregnancy) and let them know what's been going on. It might be that you need to see an obs, or even a maternal/foetal medicine specialist, or something... i would definitely want a second opinion from someone who is a specialist in looking after my baby, not just an emergency department generalist! Continued diarrhoea can be very dangerous in pregnancy, because you can get dehydrated so quickly, and this symptom on its own means I would want bub checked and whatever was wrong with me sorted or at least monitored closely.
Best of luck.

I have NAFLD (NonAlcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) it gives me the same symptomsbut does better with the better my diet is. It can take a bit for body to train to a new diet but lots of fresh veg, fiber, water, etc. Any change in my diet causes pain so most days are the same and it helps. Dieticians/nutritionists (proper ones) even with a decent diet can help with management. Also of course, no alcohol and limit simple fats to bugger all to none.Exercise also helps (and weight loss if overweight). Diet and exercise doesn't really need to have anything to dp with weight although I need to lose weight lol

Fatty liver is one symptom of celiac disease. Have you ever been tested for food intolerances or celiac? I found I was gluten intolerant during pregnancy and stayed that way after.

L&B - is that right??!
Gosh there is a pattern starting to emerge. I need to talk to my GP about this.
What was the diagnosis process for you?
-
I had blood tests looking for gluten anti-bodies which came back negative. The only way to diagnose celiac is through a biopsy of the gut whilst you're still eating gluten. I gave up gluten and couldnt bring myself to go back on for a diagnosis. For me, the pain of a gluten attack is horrific, like someone is stabbing me and ripping my insides apart. I wasn't going to endure that for 3 months for a test. I just accept I'm gluten intolerant without knowing if I've celiac.
The fatty liver from celiac disease is a sign of malnutrition, as the gut cannot absorb nutrients.
Sorry to hijack. I'm not a doctor. There are other reasons for fatty liver. I just know celiac is one of them and that pregnancy can exacerbate symptoms.

With the celiac, could that cause a bit of a runny tummy?

yep. Perhaps have a google at celiac. Not all food intolerances are celiac though. There could be other explanations.
