Well, at first I thought no. Maybe make it a cover that can be removed for the microwave.
But, then I thought; MCN are made out of minky and they can withstand a hot wash and going in the dryer....
so really I don't know. Microwaves are kind of different to dryer heat and water heat though, so I'd err on the no side.
That wasn't terribly helpful, was it?
I would recommend cotton for a heat pack. Some fabrics can retain heat and burn your skin.
Got any old denim or thick cotton twill ? I use rice for the grain and scent them with rose oil.
Flannelette??
I wouldn't I think you would run the risk of it melting, it's a synthetic so it would essentially belie putting plastic in the microwave
What do ppl think about flanny??
Flanny is cotton so I guess that's ok.
Yes HotI just plain white or brown rice. I usually heat it for two minutes on high in the microwave. It's such a good heat pack. I made it while pg with ds and it was my only labour resource lol.
the heat packs i use, have been made out of natural fibres, e.g various types of cotton, such as corduroy. I suspect the same as Effjay, that synthetic fabrics and heat, are to be avoided.
If you are unsure of what to buy, tell the fabric store staff you are after natural fibre fabric for a heatbag, the type of cotton that is woven tight enough to hold in the wheat/rice or whatever they are filled with. i would try googling "how to make a wheat bag" and see if there are some suggestions. Type in AUST so you get some local ideas (otherwise you will read about products that might not be available here).
good luck
I have made before but not urging mainly fabric, due the heat risk. Yes washing it in water is fine as it doesn't get heated to the same temp as a microwave.
I have used
Corduroy
Flannelette
Cotton
