Clearing wax from kids ears

Any suggestions on what I can do to clear wax from a 4 yr olds ears?
I had her at the dr today (not my own :( ) as she has been complaining of a sore ear all night and morning, had runny nose, temps etc. I suspected maybe an eye infection. So off we go. He tells me her ear is too full of wax to tell anything but said her tonsils are inflamed. He couldn't tell me anything about how to clear the wax and ease some of the pain... this coming from a dr who told me to give a 4 yr old some strepsils!

So, anyone had this same thing? How did you clear it??

Two ways, get them to lie down in a warm bath, wax tends to soften in water & dribble out. You can very gently clean around the opening only afterwards with a twisted bit of tissue.

Other way: there are ear wax softening drops you can get at the chemist, good idea to discuss which one is best with the pharmacist as some require cotton wool or not moving for a while afterwards (ie not very kid friendly).

ETA a lolly bribe, or even better, a spoonful of Manuka honey might create an incentive to have the drops done ;).

ETA - might be worth getting another opinion too. A possible ear infection is not something you want to muck around with, it can be horridly painful.

Yeah. i'm going to keep an eye on her. Worst case I can call the dr tonight that comes out to the house.

Ear candling. I do my kids, great stuff. Chinese medicine practitioners and other health professionals do it. If youre in Melb (cant see on phone) look up BB's Chinese medicine/acupuncturist, Chris Tang at Eastern Vitality :)

Ear candeling is the best. My dh and I do it and have been told you can do a six momth old with half a candle. Its amazing what comes out.

Ear candling is not a good idea if there is infection present because it sucks against the ear drum and can cause it to rupture.

Candling in a healthy but waxy ear is fine.

I thought she was cleared of an infection which is why I suggested :)

If there is an infection, you can put drops of an oil and garlic natural remedy that apparently works really well (google the amounts and how to do it).
