Can anyone tell me about atypical glandular cells

Hi ladies. Im trying to get my head around the fact that my mum has told me she had an abnormal pap smear result... It came up as "atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance"

Her specialist thinks there's a high possibility of endometrial cancer, as her blood test for cancer markers came back high (not sure of exact numbers)

The specialist oncologist gynae told her to expect lots of testing, including another pap smear which she has already had and lots more bloods. They are also booking her in for a d&c and going to take biopsies at the same time. They told her to prepare to have a hysterectomy.

What is happening to my Mum? What's the survival rate if she does have confirmed endometrial cancer?
Im absolutely crushed with the news. I only heard today.

My mum who is 70yrs old was dx with endometrial ca in her uterus and she had to have 4 treatment of radioation within her as in the knocked her out and inserted these radioactive rod things into her ...zapped the ca took the rods out all under GA at the Peter Mac Hospital (she couldnt have a hyster as she had other medical conditions that made her at a higher risk of dying on the table .. and she is fine Ca has gone and she has nothing anywhere else in her system .... so chin up it doesnt have to be doom and gloom :) but i say that with lots of respect for you as it is bloody scary x

So, today my Mum seen the surgeon. She goes under a ga Wednesday next week for a full hysterectomy.

I've just spent the last hour curled up on the bathroom floor crying. Im so scared for her. I just want to be strong for her. I don't know if she needs any treatment yet post surgery. Wish I knew. :-( she's not telling us the whole story yet as I think it's not hit her yet. I just want to be there for her. I need to be strong for her.

So sorry to hear your Mum is going through a tough time at the moment and thus, so are you.

Is there any way you can go to appointments with her. If you can, take a note book with you and write down as much as you can while there. There is alot to take in and you are so overwhelmed with what you are being told that writing it down helps later.

Don't google to much as most stories reported are bad news ones. The good results ones are often not reported.

:hug: I'm sure your mum isn't holding out on you. There is no way they can possibly know if or what other treatment will definitely be needed until they have done the surgery & the pathology results have come back. Until then, they are only guessing at best. I know it's hard but just try to take it one step at a time. And yes, your mum is probably a bit shell shocked too but that is perfectly normal.

If you or your mum need some extra support or just a supportive ear, the cancer council helpline is fantastic. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it, even if that's just advice about how to support your mum during treatment & recovery. :hug:

Just to update. My mum had a hysterectomy on Wednesday. The operation went well, the pathology however, won't be back until her 4 week review. Will update then.

My sister had an abnormal pap smear in October last year, had the cone biopsy and then had a hysterectomy in January.

While that's not a great outcome - she hasn't needed any treatment (chemo/radiation) because they got it all.

So there's a pretty positive story for you! (Well I think LOL)
