Anyone used a cradle/rocker? Did it help settle baby? Any issues?

Just like the title says, really.
DS won't be ready to move out of the cot when this bubs arrives so looking at bassinets etc to cover the changeover. Having had two little ones who needed movement to help them settle, I wondered whether one of those boori cradle rockers might be the way forward (found some reasonable priced ones on eBay) but curious to know of other's experiences...

Did the rocking action actually help?
Did you have any problems with using a cradle?
How long did your little one stay in it?

NB, before anyone mentions a hammock... Yes, I'd love one. (covet, covet!! ;) ) But I can't afford it, especially for the short period bubs will be in it (really need something that'll last us 6 months).

San, I'd be more than happy to lend you my Amby for you to use as long as you need. I was just about to sell it but it's not urgent, it can wait until after you're done :) Let me know, even if you just try it out and decide it's not for you, at least we tried.

Out of curiosity, how long did miss A stay in it? The website says 12ish months but most reviews I've read suggest that it becomes tricky getting them in and out after a while and that some become unsettled in it once they start trying to roll. I'm thinking DS is going to need at least another 6 months in the cot... unless he learns to climb out first (GULP!!).

We found it really useful for DD2's reflux, especially before she was medicated. We didn't end up using it much for a few reasons: 1) DD2 is a total lap baby and wants to be held constantly, 2) DD1 was always pulling at it and trying to get in it, 3) I got lazy putting DD2 down at night, now that she's medicated for her reflux she sleeps in my arms, and 4) we only have a small place and didn't really have the room. I love it though and found it great for the first few weeks of DD2's life, she settled in it really well.

Santosha - I used my Amby Baby Hammock for my eldest until he was 23 months old. The other two slept in it for 9 and 12 months. Rolling was never an issue (it is very hard to roll over in a hammock!) and the older they got, the easier it was for me to place them in the hammock. I kind of just chucked them in by that stage lol!

Both mine slept in an Amby hammock for at least 6 months.

We hired then purchased a second hand Amby from Hire for baby! Best thing ever!

I used the Boori cradle for DDs 1 and 2 and it was lovely, but no way did I get anything like 6 months out of it. Size wise it was fine, but I breed physical overachievers and so the little minxes were pulling themselves up so they were out of it by 4 months.

I had a hammock (not an Amby) for DD3 and she was in it so much longer. Who knows what each baby would have been like in a different bed, but DD3 has been by far the easiest to settle and I do think a lot of that was due to the hammock.

Yay for getting one from PZ. You and your squishy will love it.

We love it. It took a bit of working out and emails to Trish ( thanks Trish!) but it's brilliant. If DD wakes in the night I can simply push the side of the hammock and it will often rock her back to sleep. She usually settles herself to sleep in it by bouncing herself. We have also taken it away with us and it was easy for DP to set up in minutes.
The base of the frame will also slide under our bed, making more space in the bedroom.
It's worth buying or borrowing the Amby sheets cause nothing else we used fitted properly.
