Repolarisation Abnormality in Infants - Experiences? Advice?

Hello...again...I seem to be in this section more than I like.

So, DD3s ECG came back not so crash hot. Initially in ER they told us it was normal, but after the full report came back it has shown a repolarisation abnormality.

we have an urgent referral to cardiology at the RCH...but in the meantime...i am quietly freaking out. I am beginning to suspect that her seizures are related and I am increasingly feeling uncomfortable with the whole gig. *of course* being her mum and being paranoid I am now convinced it is something like long QT syndrome or something. unfortunately it was DDs neurologist that had to deliver the results, and well, he's a neurologist not a cardiologist so couldnt really offer any information or insight.

anyone else had this show up with their babies/kids?

Hi Cassius, I don't know the background of your DD's condition and if you posted a thread about her having seizures I missed it. It is impossible to talk about a cardiac condition without knowing what it is. Has your DD had a halter monitor? Do any of your family have long QT (or the symptoms of it), as it is usually inherited? If your DD does have long QT, treatment with beta blockers is usually very effective. Although it is certainly not a desirable condition, there are several treatment options.

Who diagnosed a repolarisation problem? Was it a cardiologist or a doctor in A&E or on a general ward? Without a lot of experience, subtleties in ECG interpretation are notoriously difficult. Wait to see the cardiologist before you panic - very difficult I know! The cardiology department of the RCH are world renowned, as is the entire hospital. Your DD is in good hands. I have had both personal and professional dealings with them.

I suspect that the urgency for an appointment with a cardiologist is based on the fact that your DD has had seizures which may (MAY!) be related to a cardiac condition, as well as her age. If the doctor's who interpreted the ECG was convinced that your DD had a life threatening cardiac condition, I expect that your DD would have been transferred to RCH by ambulance and would be seen immediately. Deep breaths.... don't panic. :hug:

Nickle: you are awesome! umm, i am 99% sure that it wasnt neurology that did the report. it *must* of been someone from ER? Even though on the night they said that it came back normal??

I have the referral in my hand (from our neuro) as of today and it reads: ECG reported as showing right ventricular hypertrophy and repolarisation abnormality.

There is no one, i believe that has the long qt thing....thank goodness! my aunty had a funky heart attack (apparently a rare kind...where the vessels come away from themselves?? that was ages ago and she was apparently lucky to survive....sorry cannot for the life of me remember what it was called...i am so technical right now lol).

her neurologist did say not to panic lol. i should just listen to him huh? :D

UPDATE!

Ok, so I thought to update this wee thread :D

The news is good!

DD3 had her appt with cardiology where they did the ultrasound and ECG. the cardiologist was happy that her heart is all good! She does have a slight murmur and a small hole in the heart but said that roughly 15% of the population has it with no worries whatsoever.

It was one of those moments where there was immediate relief but then followed by his comment that it confirms her seizures are neurological in nature rather than heart related (heart related seizures apparently are more like feinting, floppy and pale responses for example).

BUT! i am claiming victory on this front! at least now we are in one department instead of two :D
