Hand foot & mouth disease

HF&M is doing the round of the school. And I was thinking DS & DD2 might have it, but I'm really not sure.

DS had a couple tiny spots around his mouth & DD has one ulcer looking sore in her mouth. That's all, but I'm wary.

I assume if it was HF&M they'd have gotten worse? More spots, the rash, something? We're heading to the gp this arv & I've kept them home today JIC.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced it & how long it lasted. I couldn't work today & missed a good $100 for the day... I'm hoping if it is something like this it won't last past a few days... Reality is that I have 4 kids who'll end up getting it one at a time...

I am doubting that that's what it is, but looking for hope in case it is :lol:

When we had hfm it wasnt the ulcers that were the problem but the horrible flu symptoms that came with it. We were so sick.

How are they feeling otherwise?

if it is the ulcers, my son was fine in himself, but couldnt go back to daycare for a week or until all the sores were crusted and dry.

FX it isnt HFMD so you dont have to take time of work!

DS2 had it a while ago, he started with a fever with no other symptoms. The fever lasted around 48 hours and had me stumped as he wasn't ill in any other way.

Then the spots came out, a few on his hands and feet, and quite a few in the nappy area. Once the rash showed he was fine, but still had to stay home, I can't remember how long though sorry!

Had the check up. Looks like I was over reacting! Keep them home tomorrow just in case, but if nothing else happens we're all good :)

Clover, a few years back all 4 of mine had HF&M within two weeks of each other and the first one to get it got it so mild that we didn't even twig that it was HF&M until the others got it too. All they got were 2 ulcers in the mouth and was it. I"d definitely be keeping an eye out though

Pretty much the same with DD2. She would have got blisters on the Tues/Wed and went back to childcare/kinder the following Monday.

We are nearing the end of the worst case of HF&M. Older three DS's have all had it but 11month old has had and still has spots now and its been just over 3 weeks and 3 years old will be three weeks on Wednesday. Both just had the one day of fever then spots that just keep coming up and new ones come up every 5 or 6 hours it seems. Poor 3 year old has lost a whole layer of skin from most fingers and toes from the blisters merging. Dr said usually lasts 5-7 days - i guess at least we're above average in something :) oh and DS's started in his mouth too - I imagine if it is HF&M they will have more noticeable spots elsewhere by morning. Hope not for your sake!

Wow, that sounds nasty :(
I didn't think it was, because I noticed DS's Saturday arvo & they haven't changed, except maybe a little bigger & DD mentioned the spot in her mouth last night, but it was still the only one when we got to the gp at 4.15 today. But its one of those things I needed to know. For work & my sanity!

The 100km round trip wasn't a complete waste of petrol though, DD1 needed antibiotics for an ear infection... Glad I thought to ask as I was leaving.

My two girls have just had it for the first time ever. DD2 got it first with high fevers for three nights running then she only got a few blisters all up - a few on her feet spread out over a week or so and a couple on her hands. My GP thought I was a bit crazy suspecting it when I told her but she confirmed it after seeing the blisters. All up it lasted around 10 days.

DD1 now has it/had it too according to the GP. No blisters at all for her that we have seen but she had high fevers for three nights running too, random stomach pains and nausea and a cold (or cold symptoms). She's been mildly sick for a week on Wednesday and we saw the GP Saturday.

It's a nuisance and not pleasant for the kids, hope yours are well soon.

We have just had it, and originally thought DS was teething. We were fobbed off twice before the ED Dept at Joondalup diagnosed it, and they were right on the money.
We noticed little spots on their bums, and then the blisters on DD's feet and tongue, but not on DS, he must've just had blisters in hios mouth :(

My DD had it earlier this year. Thankfully her rash was mainly on bum and limbs not in her mouth (she was about 8-9 months at the time) so she wasn't too cranky and still fed well. Her rash did get staph infected though so she needed antis. I had to keep her home from childcare for a week.

My DD had it when she was 12 months old and it was awful. She had a shocking fever for two days and flu like symptoms and then the rash came out. Ulcers all over her hands, feet, mouth and bottom. Hubby got it next and he was completely wiped out. It affects everybody differently. If they get a nasty case you could be home from work 3-4 days to more than a week.
