Poor little man has dropped a big can of beetroot on his big toe. The nail has gone black and his toe is all red and swollen and the way he's walking (and the way he screamed when it happened), it's clearly very painful. But I figure there's not really anything that can be done, even if the bone is broken, am I right? Would anyone take their LO to the doctor/hosp for the same injury?
My DS dropped a log on his toe at 3yrs, took him to the dr (because his toenail had lifted) and the dr wouldn't do anything because he was so young, he said to put a bandaid on till it fell off naturally and that was that, he ended up fine! Even if an adult breaks their toe, nothing can be done, just maybe resting it while it's still sore. Kids bounce back much faster than us though ;-)
A few years ago I also dropped a big can on my big toe and was in agony and I honestly thought I had broken it (and didnt think anything could be done about it) so didnt seek medical treatment straight away. 2 days later it was still very sore so I went to the medical centre at work and the paramedic said it was the build up of blood under the nail that was causing the pain. He drilled it and got all the blood out and it was instant relief so if the nail is black it might be worth getting it looked at incase they do need to drill it.
Thanks ladies. Same advice across the board (here, FB and nurse at the GP's office) so we are off to hosp. Poor little guy. And poor DD who's really sick and has to sit in the hosp for a few hours.
Ahh well. Lesson learnt. No more allowing DS free reign in the pantry to build can towers!

I've only just seen this but glad you took him in. I've broken several toes, and mostly the treatment has been to rest, ice to reduce swelling, but once the bone fragment was displaced and needed to be realigned. Based on that experience, I would *always* get a suspected fracture checked out. Often it's not possible to tell if "looks right" because of the swelling.
I hope they are able to do something to make him more comfortable, quickly. And :hug: to mummy too, it's hard to see your LO in pain.
Back again. Apart from taking 45 mins to get a park which had me tearing my hair out, was all very quick. Poor little man had to go into x-ray with the doctor (a cute, young Scottish doctor but only Mummy was pleased about that ;) ). They didn't want me in there 'cause I'm pregnant. I've never seen him go so overwhelmed and quiet. He just completely froze and looked down at the ground and allowed them to move his foot around. Broke my heart to watch, he was clearly terrified, but was maybe preferable to sitting on a screaming toddler to get an X-ray which I've done with DD.
No breaks and there's not too much pressure behind the nail so it's just panadol and minimal shoes for a bit.
