Do I hire a capsule for Bub?

DS starts 4yo kindy next Feb. I will have a newborn Bub (due late Dec) and have been wondering how I will deal with kindy pick ups and drop offs.

I'm guessing that for *at least* one of the four trips we make each kindy day (drop off, return home, pick up, return home), Bub will be asleep or fall asleep on the way....how do I get out of the car to take DS in/pick him up without waking a sleeping bub? Getting a sleeping baby out of a carseat is going to wake them....Putting a sleeping baby back into a carseat is going to wake them. So, my logical thought is to hire a capsule I can take out and carry. But....

....Aren't capsules bulky? How heavy are they empty? Will I be able to carry it and carry DS's bag and hold his hand too?

What other options do I have for making those transitions? If I do carry Bub, I can't put him down to cuddle DS/help him with whatever he needs help with. A sling/carrier would help, but not with transitions in and out of the car.

Am I worrying too much about stuffing up the sleeping pattern of a newborn?

I love love love baby capsules! We have had one with all our bubs. We bought a 2nd hand one (one safe travel brand) for No. 3 and it was a life saver when it came to kindy pick up and drop offs. I kept using it (including taking in and out of the car etc) until DD hit the 9kg weight limit. It was great to be able to put her down safely on the ground in it.

Not having to buckle and unbuckle every time we got in and out of the car was a time saver too (though I have 3 to buckle in, you'll only have two).

Yes it is heavy (particularly as the bubs get bigger) but most people can manage to carry between 7-13kg for a short distance! I found the ones with only one handle were much more comfy to carry than the two handled basket style ones.

Capsules are great for these things. They are most useful in the first 3 months depending on how big your baby is. After that I found mine too heavy to carry. But I had a pram that it clipped onto so used it until he was 6 months.

I'd suggest your son will need to start carrying his own bag though - you'll need that pair of hands!

I agree with above- a capsule is the perfect solution to your daycare drop offs. As mentioned above, if you have a big baby the capsule has a more limited lifespan, but it will get through those first sleepy baby months.

do you know any other parents who will be doing drop off at same time? you might find someone in similar circumstances who is happy to swap waiting by the car with running kids in on alternate days.

i was reading this thread, thinking about how i coped with DD and DS, and then realised i will be doing kinder drop offs with a newborn and 2 yr old this year! and i can't fit a capsule in so bub will have to come with me unless i find someone i can swap duties with.

Capsules are great for the kindy run. I used to put DD2 straight into the capsule in the house if she was sleepy near drop off time and often she would still be asleep when we got home.

The do get heavy quite quickly but baby also starts staying awake more as they grow so it all works out.

Thanks for your replies. I looked into a capsule pram combo, but it seems a bit wasteful to buy a new pram when we have a perfectly serviceable one already. And I don't think they cost $250 like this one (we got a bargain!). I am worried about being able to carry everything - I am a true weakling and struggled lifting the 3.5kg pram base in and out of the boot with DS!

I borrowed one from a friend with DD but she never slept through transfers so it was kind of pointless. (And I preferred to wear her ratger than use the stroller anyway.) If you're not going to use it with your stroller I wouldn't bother.

And yes, I found it really heavy and awkward to clip into the car.
