Please help at my wits end here!!

Hi guys,so DD who is 4 well weve just been nothing but sick since she started kindy in January but the last few months have been pure hell,but anyway getting to the point at hand,DD has had a cough and cold bad again for few days probably started properly Thursday night last week,then she seemed a lot better yesterday just the lingering cough so I sent her to kindy,so I picked her up and she seemed fine then about 5.30 started complainging about a bad ear ache I mean REALLY bad crying sobbing wailing so I stupidly went up to the after hours doc,sat there with her for 2 hours crying loudly and whining loudly ouch ouch and was told there was only one doc on and 11 infront of me she was such a mess I decided to come home nearly in tears myself,so I tried the call out doc service and he came within an hour and half,but he looked in her ears(and im not saying this out of disrespect to him because he was great and I think coz she finally took some nurofen and was so tired she fell aslepp on Dh when he came that when he was asking her she was all out of it)but he looked and said they were ok,so off he goes and she goes to bed and about an hour later is up wailing and crying all night just really bad in a bad way so ive been sitting with her all night and trying to calm her and the only thing that's taking the edge off is nurofen and only lasting a little while so I was going to go to my doc today but im scared!!!what if they say theres nothing they can see?is there any ear problems that hurt realy bad but they cant see?Im so exhausted weve had one bug after another with foot and mouth and vomiting only last week which I got the worst(I know bring out the violins)I just wandered if anyone else has had this where the doc says theres no redness or anything yet there crying in pain???Thanks soooo much in advance

Could it be something like a sinus headache? I hope you get an answer at the Dr and that she is feeling better soon xx It really sucks when you get bug after bug after bug. Hopefully summer will bring better health for your family.

It's common for kids to catch everything when they first start kinder/school/childcare. Once her immune system builds up, she won't get sick anywhere near as much. When my DS first started school I'm sure he was home sick more than he was at school. However, my youngest was never sick during her first year of school because she was exposed to it all before she started so her immunity had built up that little bit earlier.

It's so hard when they first start at kindly/daycare. They do seem to be constantly sick. I will tell you my story not to scare you but to perhaps advocate better for your daughter than I did for mine. My DD was 11 months when started at daycare and we had same issues seemingly constantly sick would barely get over one thing and then would catch the next. I was taking her to our GP at the time who kept telling me it was viral nothing we could do etc etc. I trusted this doc and didn't listen to my mama instincts. This went on for about 6 weeks during which time my daughter had her first febrile convulsion. Every time I went to GP she checked her ears and told me she could see nothing. I went back to GP and got told all the above things on a Tuesday. As we were about to leave I noticed the skin behind DDs left ear was very red and pointed it out to doc. She had a look and dismissed it as nothing. I went about day until my DH came home and pointed out DDs left ear was sticking out. So off to ER we went. DD was diagnosed with Mastoiditis (infection in the bone behind her ear) which was caused by an undiagnosed ear infection. She was in emergency surgery the next morning to clean all the gunk out, put a grommet in and check the mastoid bone was not damaged.

I felt terrible. The surgeon questioned me why I hadn't taken her to the GP. I explained everything to him and he was so surprised that a child that had been presenting with illnesses for that long had not been put on ABs just to see if there was an underlying infection festering away. He thinks my poor DD had an ear infection for almost that entire 6 week period.

Needless to say that GP is no longer our doctor. I think she was so hell bent on not handing out ABs willy nilly that she just lost sight of the overall picture.

If this same scenario was to present in one of my children again it would demand a trial of ABs. I know it is important to build up immunity and ABs don't work on viruses, but from my experience there can definitely be something more going on than can always be seen and one course of ABs is not going to ruin their own ability to fight of viruses.

I'm sure others will have a different view to me, but this is my view from our experience.

I know that if I have a really snotty nose happening, I often get sore ears due to the mucous backing up in my sinus cavity.
Try getting her to lie on her side with the sore ear facing up, if this relieves the pain, then you know that's what it is. If that works, maybe try an antihistamine to dry up the mucous or get her to drink tons of water to make sure that it stays runny, not gluey and thUs drains better.

If they look and can't see anything then ask what else could be causing the pain. Something is bothering her so go to the Dr and make sure when you leave with a course of action for SOMETHING whether it is ears or something else. No need to feel scared, there are lots of things that are harmless that could cause discomfort, like a tooth issue, swelling of the glands near her ears related to fighting to perpetual cold, sinuses, a muscle that got strained or slept on funny or hit etc.
But ear infections seem to be really often missed by GPs (going by my friends experiences, we've never had an ear issue) and if you do discover an ear infection that was missed by the first GP.....well you certainly wouldn't be the first to be in that boat, it seems to happen a lot.

Just something to think about, my DS was getting sick every 2-3 weeks. He was 4 in preschool. He ended up having a dairy intolerance and was catching everything because his immunity was so low.

A probiotic can do wonders, I buy mine from the pharmacy in the fridge.

Did you go to the doc today? What was the outcome? Hope all is ok

Hi ladies,just wanted to thankyou all so much for yor replys,i never realised how alone you can feel when you have kids or scared its like your expected to be strong because your the parent!We had a big night and big day so will re post all the info in the morning,DD ended up in hospital but is ok now and on strong anti biotics thank goodness!I will tell you about it tomorrow so tired but just wanted to say thankyou!:) and Janie71 thanks for rechecking,i cant believe what happened with your poor DD and I have heard that happen before and totally agree,if they need antibiotics to get better they need it and my DD sure does so im glad she got something today,will tell all tomorrow thanks again!!

:hug: Sounds like you had a really tough day. I'm glad your DD was seen by another doctor & that you got some answers & importantly some treatment. I hope your DD starts feeling better quickly.
