Mattress Topper - do you have one?

DH and I are, for the first time, having to sleep on our spare bed, which is a fold up ikea sofa bed thing. People have been staying with us for years and no one has complained.
We have nice guests, very nice. 'Cos oh my goodness, it's awful! It's so hard, and has no give. We have bought a convoluted egg shell type mattress topper and it has made a difference but not really enough. It's still hard.
I have googled and found other types of mattress toppers like memory foam etc, but they are quite expensive and they look quite thin so I wonder how much of a difference they could possibly make.

Do you have one or have you used one? Are they good? Have you got another suggestion for us?

I have no idea really but my first thought is how often is the bed used? Because one would think something like memory foam or the egg shell stuff would get damaged from a fold up bed if it's kept on the bed for a long time when it's folded up?

I have one, it is from a linen party I went to a couple of years ago. I have it on a latex mattress and it makes a huge amount of difference from the plain mattress.

We recently bought a memory foam topper for our spare bed. I think we bought it off Deals Direct for $200. It had to off-gas for a while. It's made that bed so much more comfortable. It's nothing compared to our main Tempur mattress, but at least we dont end up in agony if one of us sleeps in the spare bed anymore.

The topper we bought is about 10cm thick and is like a fitted sheet, so it's less likely to slip off the mattress.

Hope, thanks for your concern. I'm not to bothered if it gets a small amount of damage along the centre line where its bent. Small price to pay, and it's not like anyone sleeps in the centre anyway.

I recently purchased a pure latex topper for our queen bed $195. OMG it has made a world of difference (I bought at the end of pregnancy and it cured all aches and pains overnight!!) I love it!!! pillow talk is the shop we got it from. Comes with a zip off cotton cover.

We have one from Sheridan - we got it in a 70% off sale (or was it 50% - I'm sure I told DH it was 70% off!) and it's literally like sleeping on a cloud. I washed it recently and it took 3 days to dry...never washing it again - it was like sleeping on concrete without it!

Ladybird, what brand is the latex one? We already have a v. firm latex mattress (hubby picked it, against my better judgement) & I am desperate for some softness. I figure more latex wont change how "warm" the bed is.

For those with memory foam, you can't have an electric blanket with them, can you? And how warm are they over summer (when it's hot)?

And Muppity, which Sheridan product do you have? How is it for warmth? & does it give any support or just soft ****iness?

hahaha yes they can get a little warm!!! I am not sure what brand it is, it was at the Pillow talk shop, the only pure latex one they have. It is super soft!! THe other thing you could get to hep with the warm is a pure wool topper."Blessed Earth" have very expensive organic wool toppers. Wool helps regulate the temperature much better, it is not hot at all, and any moisture gets absorbed and evaporates away. I have a wool pillow from there....

Ladybird, I'm all set up with coolness mattress protector, etc. I've thought about getting something wool-based, but I used to have a pure wool quilt & it didn't take long for it to compress down. For a quality that's ok (it still gives you warmth) but for softness it wouldn't work as well

We have a mattress protector that I brought from Lorraine lee linen 5/6? years ago - it has a water proof backing & thick micro fibre (fleece?) top with a stretchy "skirt" so it hugs the mattress & doesn't move. I love it - it's soft, warm in winter (I have no need for an electric blanket), helps to keep us cool in summer by drawing moisture away & it doesn't have a stain on it - DP is a sweaty person in bed but the grimy marks come out in the wash. Mind you I think I only wash it twice a year - at the beginning & end of the warmer weather.
The downside is it's too bulky for our washing machine but I make it fit (naughty naughty). It only takes a day to dry though in 25+ temps

TRue about the compressing. I would try and avoid any synthetic toppers... Do you have a pillow talk near you?? They are normally $295 we got ours for $195 best 200 bucks I have spent, my nights are blissful sleep and my body feels amazing!
