6 mo Rash around mouth and itchy head

As the title suggests, my 6mo has a horrible red rash around his mouth and seems to get a very itchy head. I don't know if these things are related. He has been diagnosed with mild eczema and I have been advised to cut egg out of my diet (he is breast fed) as he showed an allergic reaction to it. But, even when his head doesn't look like it has any eczema, if he gets his hands out of his wrap when in bed, he will scratch his scalp until it bleeds. And the raw, red skin around his mouth doesn't seem to bother him, but it looks painful and I'm having a hard time getting rid of it. I have tried steroid and cortisone creams, QV, sorbolene, etc etc. I guess what I'm wondering is whether anyone else has experienced symptoms like these and what worked for you?

Oh, being 6mo there is a good chance he's teething, but the rash is not simply and dribble rash - too persistent and does not extend to his neck.

ETA, he doesn't seem to scratch when he's awake.

A rash around the mouth suggests a food cause. Def start by cutting out eggs, but be aware it could take awhile to see improvement. Also, he could grow out of it, so it doesn't mean no eggs forever either.

The itchy head sounds just horrible for him. It's easy to be distracted when awake, so he might not itch when there's other stuff to hold his attention. DH still wakes me occasionally at night if my eczema has flared up because I'm itching in my sleep!

Sounds like you definitely need steroids/cortisone to get on top of it, then it's a matter of trial and error in finding a gentle moisturiser to slather on several times a day. I'd be seeing your GP again, maybe a specialist if you can't get on top of it. Lots of people are singing the praises of coconut oil at the moment - might be worth a try.

I would think the two may be unrelated and like JLeigh has say it sound like a food intolerance. Is he starting solids? My DD had what you described after anything tomato based. It was present before she started solids (from BF) but got much much worse once she started eating.

I can recommend moo goo eczema and psoriasis cream. Very effective and safe for bubs- it's made of edable ingredients and works wonders.
