Where is your 5 year old?

Ds is about 5.5. Will turn 6 in March. He's in pre primary (WA). Kindy or i think prep else where.
He's getting pretty good with addition & im just curious to where other kids around the same age are.
I'm not bragging. I don't know if I even have those rights, that's why I'm asking lol.
He can put any 2 numbers under 10 together. Not using his fingers, just in his head & about 90% of the time he's right. He asks me to give them to him, so just enjoys it.

I just want to know if I'm going over board thinking he's amazing! Lol
I have been planning to ask his teacher where they actually are with their maths so I know, & so they know he actually enjoys it, just haven't gotten there.

DD was 6 in September and is doing kindy in NSW. Is that the same as pre primary? I get confused with the different systems.

For maths, she knows all her number up to and past 100. She can count missing numbers (ie in 2's, 3's, 5's) including backwards (ie 100 back to 0 in 5's). She is currently learning to read the time. She can do addition in her head for probably numbers less than 20 (ie 11+5). She can do subtraction in her head for anything less than 10, probably some less than 20. DH taught her about negative numbers and she understands that concept (ie 2-4=-2).

For reading, she is on a Level 19 reader. She can read signs when we are out and about and we can't spell words out anymore because she can work out what we're saying!

Liebs was adding 2-digit numbers easily around his 5th birthday and expressing his ideas about maths. These, at that time, included the basics of algebra.

Encourage it. The world needs people who are confident in their maths.

Dd1 is 6.5 and in prep in Vic, she loves numbers and was doing basic addition at 5 and now does subtraction and times tables at home as they are only doing grouping, graphs and a little bit of addition and dubtractionin class. We don't force her too she asks all the time while we are in the car she can now do it without using her fingers.

The IXL website shows what skills are supposed to be achieved in each year if you are curious. Addition to 10 appears to be a Year 1 skill, so he is ahead of what is expected. I always love hearing about kids being great at maths - keep being proud :)

My DS is also in pre-primary (yep same as Kindy in NSW) and in his school they will know counting to 100 (and over) 2 times tables to 20 (DS taught himself past 100 just by playing basketball!), 5 times tables to 50, basic addition (DS does number sentences). He can also do it all in his head, which is way better than I can do!

Everyone in his class are at different stages though. I do think my DS is also a genius! Probably because he rocks at maths and I was always so bad at it!

Sounds like you have every reason to think he's totally amazing :)

DS1 will be 6 next month.

He can count to 100, skip count (2,4,6 or 5,10,15 etc), basic addition and subtraction, read the time pretty accurately.

His spelling is awesome, he's now spelling words like scream, said, puppy, kitten etc, no more cat, hat for him lol

I don't remember where either of the older girls were. I think more because DD1 was never interested enough to bring it home & DD2 has always struggled.

He does enjoy it. I was giving him the occasional subtraction, might start again. He likes the challenge of it.

He can count to 100 or more, didn't skip a number last year (4yo kindy) counting back from 100 taking turns as a group.

Its a little bit exciting for me to have a boy who wants to learn! Math came pretty easy to me til we got to pythagorus... changed schools, missed bits & never got it. Algebra was easy though.

I just hope he keeps up with his want to learn. His kindy teacher has 4 boys & said that some are just keen to learn & some aren't. Enjoy it coz only 2 of her 4 just wanted to learn.

With reading he's frustrating though. He just memorises the story & tries to get through it quick as he can, hardly even looking at the words...
