This is what I found when I looked up salazopyrin (which is the brand name) online and in my pharmacology textbook.
Pregnancy-Sulfasalazine/Sulphasalazine has not been studied in pregnant women. However, reports on women who took sulfasalazine during pregnancy have not shown that it causes birth defects or other problems. In addition, sulfasalazine has not been shown to cause birth defects in studies in rats and rabbits given doses of up to 6 times the human dose.
It is used to treat ulcerative colitis, Chron's disease, as well as Rheumatoid arthiritis.
My Pharmacology text actually says its in catgeory A - which is supposedly safe to take in pregnancy.
But definately check with your Dr before taking any medications during pregnancy.

My DH also took this for ulcerative colitis. I would definitely be asking a specialist about this.
I take salazopyrin for rheumatoid arthritis. My rheumatologist has assured me the whole way through that it is perfectly safe to take while pregnant and will not harm the baby in any way. I've also had this double checked by a friend who is an obstetrician/gynecologist, and also by my gynecologist.

Salazopyrin does have a bad effect on sperm counts, and there are some fairly nasty side effects, but I've found that they were only a problem when I was adjusting to the dosage I need (admittedly low). I will admit that even though everything assures me that it is safe during pregnancy, I will be reducing my dosage as much as possible if I conceive.
Brooke - it feels like it's been forever! I'm doing fairly ok, even though life seems to be doing it's best to kick me while I'm down - working on not letting the negativity take over.

I take Salazopyrin for Ulcerative Colitis and have done for many years. I am up to my third pregnancy and have continued to take it for all three. I do however reduce my dose to half when pregnant even though I am advised by both obstitrition, GP and specialist that it is safe to take during pregnancy.
I have never had any problems when taking this drug during pregnancy but I did suspect before this current pregnancy that it might have been inhibiting me getting pregnant so I stopped taking it and resumed again when pregnant. (I don't know whether this helped or not).
As you can see I am due to have my third bubba in a few weeks and as advised by my specialist I will stop taking Salazopyrin one or two weeks before I'm due to be on the safe side when I go into labour.
I was told it would be fine to have during pg as i have rhumetoid arthritis. As it was i didn't end up having it but was assured it would be fine by both my rhuemotologist and OB
I have Crohn's and no longer on this drug as was allergic, but my gastro assured me that it was safe to take during pregnancy, just check.
I read that Salazopyrin shouldnt be taken whilst breast feeding is that true??
TMM your Dr will weigh up the pros & cons and decide what is best.
Depending what you take it for they may even offer to change your medication.
I am on Salazopyrin, apparently its a category 1 medication, but I'm not sure that I would be willing to take it.
I take it for ulcerative colitis & because the pros out weighed the cons i was told to take it.
Both my girls are were fine while i was on it :)
