Bad breastmilk?

Probably a stupid thought, but... I'm scared that my breastmilk is making both the girls throw up :(

Amelia isn't really breastfeeding much anymore, but she's had two significant feeds in the past 24 hours and had a few massive vomits soon after both. The first was around 3ish this morning, she had a feed, a small sleep, then woke up by covering DH and herself in the contents of her stomach. She had a few smaller spews after that, fell asleep again around 7ish. When she woke up she seemed fine. Then about half an hour ago she had another big feed (emptied a very full breast) and threw everything back up again ten minutes ago.

Elisabeth has been a spewy bub from the beginning, but has only held down one feed today. She's also fed a lot less and has been very sleepy. I'm almost scared to wake her to feed her because I'm so sure I'll end up wearing it again...

Writing all this out is making me think that maybe they're both just sick from something else, but I don't want to ignore the possibility it's something in my milk... Is it possible?

I have no idea but do you think they could have gastro?

Either a tummy bug or your supply is so great they are drinking so much so getting rid of the excess. You don't have bad milk x

Tinks - It's possible, but A hasn't had the runs... Can't really tell with E, since her poos are normally that consistency. The one I just changed was a bit mucousy though?

Eenee - Thanks :) Might just be coincidental that A's spews were after boob. I'd have to ask DH because I've been napping with E all day, but it might've been the first time her belly's been full today and her body couldn't handle it...

If your milk supply is huge at the moment it's possible they are just over filling their little stomaches on the yummy milk. I know dd was a chucky little piglet from day dot, and even now, if she is having boob, it's highly unlikely for her to give it up even if her tummy is full. She wants the milk and the comfort, and will deal with the consequences if the over full tummy later!

There is always a chance they gave a big, and for miss A in particular, she could be getting too much milk if she is unwell and wanting a comfort suck instead of a feed (and again with increased milk supply, that's more difficult

Hoping it is a case of little piglets overfilling on milky goodness and not sickness!

I wonder too if dd1 hasn't had much milk for awhile, and now her tummy is just adjusting to the rich milk. I think I remember dd having tummy troubles after ds was born.

Dd1 and ds both reacted to my breast milk with vomiting and low weight gains, but it was from birth and they had reflux. It's not common though as it's what babies are drainage to have. Dd2 was fine so it wasn't my milk. Sounds like it could be gastro or bug.

I'd very much doubt it's the content or quality of your milk. Could be reflux, too much (milk) to drink, fast flow, a touch of a virus etc, not necessarily even gastro. DD was a bit refluxy and developed a super sensitive gag reflex which meant she was prone to vomiting caused by many seemingly random things, like an over full tummy, fast flowing milk, and if she was getting a cold or virus she would always throw up a feed or two.

We had a bloody awful tummy bug here that just made everything bounce for 36 hours. DD1 never got runny poos. DD2s were runny for a week afterwards. So it's definitely possible - the food just wasn't making it to the gut to become runny.

I doubt it's your milk, and the two might not even be related.

Hm, never came back to update this. Seems Tinks was probably correct, though we were late in coming to that conclusion. Miss E threw up yellow "stuff" a few more times that day, and did a weird poo not long afterwards, so we went to the ER. Big mistake (should've known...) because they kept us in for four nights. They did some blood tests, four urine tests (two attempts at clean catch, two NEEDLES INTO HER BLADDER), then sent us home basically saying "we're not sure what made her sick but she's fine now" :-/ In the meantime DH and Miss A were home developing the runs and some minor vomiting themselves. So very traumatic all around. Should've listened to you all :cry:

Yep. Friday night through to Tuesday lunchtime. Add in some super postnatal hormones, a baby who didn't want to sleep at night, and some awful nurses, and I was sobbing to go home :-/

:( you poor thing, and poor E and A too.

Wow! That sounds horrific! Good that they took your concerns seriously and investigated, but awful that they were so horrible to you and that you and poor miss e had to go through so much trauma :(
