Uti in toddler

Dd has had a fever since yesterday afternoon.

She has no other symptoms, like runny nose, cough, sore ear etc.

Only thing she does say is that when we change her nappy "hurt" and points down below. Her wee has also been smelling quite strong and weird the last couple of days. I've rang the doctor and she's asked me to try and get a urine sample that she can test.

What are other symptoms of a uti in a toddler? At first I thought it was just teething but the temperature has been getting up to the high 39's.

Is there anything i can give her naturally to help if it is one?

Any ideas what else it could be?

It could be a uti or possibly 2 yo molars, dd2 had it happen to her we had to get a urine sample which was a challenge but there was no infection and it stopped as soon as her teeth were through. She had a fever off and on too.

DD (3yo) has had a couple of UTI's as a 2yo....

we found she was very miserable, lethargic and had a temp.
she generally didnt have other cold symptoms (runny nose, cough etc)

to get a sample, you can get little bags that stick onto their bottoms and when the pee, it will catch the sample, they only needed a tiny amount to test DD when we had taken her to the RCH, they then did a catheter to get a better sample to find out exactly what was up.

we pumped DD full of water and gastrolite and she had antibiotics and vinegar in her bath water, my nan told me about that!

We have to watch DS2 all the time for UTI's as he has a kidney problem. Signs for us are:

High Temp
Lethargic
Strong urine smell
Drinking more than usual
Sometimes vomiting

It is hard in toddlers to know for sure so only a sample can rule it out but it's something I'm extra vigilant with as I had 18yrs of UTI's before it was discovered one of my kidneys is irreparably damaged and now only works at 10% of its normal function.

TaRhLi, what age did your DS start with his UTI'S? How do you manage them?

We are going through something similar with my DS

Mummato2: My DS2 was diagnosed at our 22 week ultrasound (I was having them every 2 weeks with the twins) that one of his kidneys collection areas was enlarged and it was monitored at every ultrasound. When he was born he has an ultrasound and has had numerous blood tests and scans to monitor the blockage he has to see if it is going to correct itself as he grows or if he will need surgery to have a stent inserted.

So for us it is a genetic disposition that he has - not just standard infections - that is why we have to be extra vigilant as if he gets an infection that spreads to his good kidney then he can be in serious trouble.
