i want to make some shaped bikkies i can cook and then give to the kids to decorate. similar idea to marie biscuits, but i want to cut out shapes with a cookie cutter. a simple recipe, but failsafe so they won't crumble when kids handle them. any ideas? my brain is a bit mushy atm. thanks
I don't know the recipe off hand but if you google basic biscuit mix you should be able to find one.
Oh, you just read my mind. I was going to do this for Easter! I need a not crumbly recipe too. I was going to say a recipe like Arrowroots!

Oooh that sounds like a great idea for a birthday party! DS2's birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and that'd be great.

Hotl I believe sugar cookies are best to hold their shape and for decorating. I haven't made them myself, but have seen plenty of recipes on Pinterest. I'll have a look and post one.
I have done this with a ginger bread biscuit recipe from a Wiggles magazine of all places - I will see if can find. Biscuits were not very gingery and held up well to decoration from my two. (One time we did Movember mustache ones with their cookie cutter which was narrow in the middle and still the were ok).
I can't find the wiggles one but if you google River cottage Christmas ginger biscuits am sure was just like that but without the crystalline ginger - those ones people make to hang on trees so should be pretty durable.

I think that was the recipe, but the picture was different of gingerbread men - the magazine probably just rerun the same recipes. I like the picture in this one though - looks like actually done by children.:
I just did some sugar cookies this morning. I made the dough and then had two 4.5 year old helpers to cut and decorate them. They spread a little but I didn't put them back in the fridge after cutting them and they were cut into shapes by hot little hands! They only took 6-7 minutes to cook. I googled sugar cookies and used a recipe from allrecipes - rolled sugar cookies. Am I allowed to link?
As long as it's a non commercial link. Which is tricky. I am not sure about allrecipes - I think they have ads.

I have made sugar cookies just on the weekend, I purchased initially from a fundraiser and the kids loved them. Here is the recipe
3 and 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp Bicarb Soda
1 egg
1 cup butter at room temp (250gm)
1/2 cup whole fat greek yoghurt
1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)
Cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.
Add egg, vanilla and yogurt and mix to combine.
Add in all dry ingredients and mix into a dough.
Wrap dough in the shape of a disc in glad wrap and refrigerate for 1hour.
Preheat oven to 180deg.
Roll out dough and cut out shapes. They keep better if they are cold and firm going into the oven. Bake 12mins and cool on the tray, they will harden on cooling and then you can completely cool on a wire rack and decorate.
I had so much dough I had to refrigerate inbetween batches. Kids loved them. These did not spread at all, they did rise a little.
