Reduced formula intake, solids and colds
DS is 6.5 months old and is just getting over his first cold which he has had for about 8 days now. When his cold first appeared he went right off his formula. I thought it could be his ears hurting so I tried giving it to him in a sippy cup and syringe but he just spat it back out. He is on solids and continued eating and drinking water from a sippy cup the whole time. I took him to the Drs on day 5 as he still wasn't drinking his formula. Pre cold he was having 5 bottles a day and now I'm lucky if he has 2. The Dr checked his ears and said they were ok and he was well hydrated. Is this something I just need to ride out? Has anyone been through anything similar (whether it be breast or bottle) I know it's good he is eating solids but shouldn't his formula still be the most important source of nutrition or does it not matter so much now he is over 6 months? I can't help but worry about this one
Re: Reduced formula intake, solids and colds
My DS is also 6.5 months - and he is now on his 5th cold in his short lifetime.
Each time, he loses interest in formula, even though he is still very interested in solids. I put it down to a few things - he is struggling to breathe through his nose, making it very difficult to suck, AND he's sick, he's just lost his appetite, as we do when we're sick.
I also think the way we lie them down to drink makes the mucus run down their throats and is yuck!
I've just been riding it out, he's been getting over it and back to normal once he feels better. I also found he will drink a little more if he is sitting in the rocker.
If he is interested in solids, just put more of his milk in there (with rice cereal), that way you can get more milk into him.
Also, try to raise 1 side of his bed a little so that the mucus can come out through his nose rather than going back down into his throat.

Thanks Connie! That's what I needed to hear that it was all normal. I hope your DS gets better soon 5 colds is way to much for a little baby

I know... I feel so sorry for him, but his big brother keeps bringing them home from Kinder.
If he starts to show signs of dehydration, then you should get him checked out, but generally they're tough little cookies, and they get through it ok.
