Smelly urine
Dd2 is 5 months. She is exclusively breastfeeding.
The last couple of weeks she has had occasional smelly urine. It is still clear, but very strong smelling.
I took her to the doctors last Monday and they asked if I could do a dipstick test on a wet nappy. It has coloured up for Nitrates in her urine, no blood and a small amount of pus cells. I can't guarantee when she did the wee in the nappy, so I am not 100 percent certain there wouldn't have been bacteria already started in the nappy. It would have been changed within 2 hours of the last though.
Anyways, now I have a sticky bag thing in her nappy trying to catch some urine for the doctor so they can get it properly analysed. 1st attempt she pooed. :wall: second time dh put it in and it didn't stick properly and she only got a drop in there and the rest in the nappy :wall: now I have the last one I have in and am hoping for the best. Fx!
However, she has no fever, is drinking as per normal, it quite happy and content as per normal. Dd1 has had a uti before and she was really ill with high fever. She had the smelly urine too. Dd2 just isn't ill apart from a cough that she's had for a while.
What else could the smelly urine be from? I'm at a loss. I really hope she doesn't have a uti. I feel like a bad mum if she does have one, but we honestly change a poo-ey nappy as soon as she does it. I change her wet nappy as soon as I realise. She has a bath every day.
Is there something completely innocent that the smell could be from?

Re: Smelly urine
They'd need a clean sample to really tell anything, I would think. So easy to be contaminated from the bum or elsewhere.
I found sitting DD on a potty with a jar under her and just sitting there waiting was more effective than those bags. And you're more likely to get a clean sample, too. Good luck!

Re: Smelly urine
It can be from the food you've eaten. Garlic, onions, asparagus and an array of other foods always made my daughter's wees smell. Try a simple food diary, it could very well be something in your diet.

Re: Smelly urine
Try onthefly's way, and put a cold washer on her belly, more often than not it makes them wee =)

Re: Smelly urine
Have you been eating asparagus?

Re: Smelly urine
No asparagus, nothing really different in my diet.
Got the results today and she has a highish reading of pus cells, but no blood cells. I have to do another sample of Wednesday and see if it's increasing or decreasing. So odd

Re: Smelly urine
So I just received the results for her second sample and she definitely has a uti. Still no fever or any other symptoms apart from the smelly urine. She has a cold at the moment but that's obviously not related.
I hate that I have to give her antibiotics now. She's only 5 months. Am I going to completely stuff up her gut now? :(
It's not like I can even give her cranberry juice or anything either because of her age.

Re: Smelly urine
I wonder I'd probiotics as well would help. Perhaps Bioceuticals Baby Biotic. I had to give DD antibiotics at around that age and I wasn't happy either. Are you bf?
-
Re: Smelly urine
Yeah she is exclusively bf.
Is the baby biotics ok at that age then? I have the bioceuticals one for dd1 but I didn't have to give them to her till she was around 1.
I know the antibiotics are better than her getting kidney damage, I just worry about all the other side effects.

Re: Smelly urine
DD3 has been on antibiotics to many times to count now, but I started giving her Inner Health Plus hoping it helps her in the long run

Re: Smelly urine
Yeah, it sucks :( It's one of those weigh the relative risks situations. You could get an alternative opinion, if you want.

Re: Smelly urine
Yes the baby biotics are fine from birth, I just checked out stash and its says 0+. You can just wet your nipples with bm and dip them in the powder.
