High nuchal fluid in 2 out of 3 pregnancies
Has anyone had this happen to them. My daughter was born happy and hearthy 5 years ago after a traumatic and stressful pregnancy being told she would not be incompatible with life as had high nuchal fluid. Had my son no probs in 2012 and now 9.5 weeks and been told bubs has his nuchal fluid this time too and could be big problems.

Oh Razz  That must be incredibly stressful for you! We only went through it once and that was one time too many.
Anyway it was my first also, my subsequent two were normal.
Has your care provider said anything about the chances of it being the same thing as your DD?

The specialist who reviews the scans told me she wishes she could say that yes it's iust my babies and will be the same outcome but she can't.mshe said it's rare for it to happen and even rarer twice but the same process needs to be followed. At least this time I know what I'm in for but I feel just as scared... Just can't believe it's happened twice, as your right once is enough for one person to go through.

Hi Razzberry,
A baby having high nuchal fluid does not necessarily mean the baby will be incompatible with life but it is a marker for chromosomal differences, or depending on the fluid, it can mean an immature lymphatic system, that will mature and not cause issues down the track. Are you being referred to a fetal medicine specialist or have you been recommend for further testing? I think your dr should really be giving you more information. One of the chromosomal differences is Trisomy 21, other wise known as Down Syndrome. My daughter had fluid in her nuchal fold at 20 weeks, and we found out at 28 weeks that she has Trisomy 21. It is very scary being told that there is something 'wrong' with your baby, but my daughter is now a very healthy and active almost 2 year old, and is smashing all those old fashioned stereotypes of Down Syndrome. In fact, she's trashing the place right now in that way only 2 year olds can!

Hi SammyRo - I know it doesn't necessarily mean that they will be incompatible with life, but that was what we were told if the baby has trisomy 13 or 18. We had the harmony blood test on friday so will know results hopefully within the week. I am ok with having a child with Down Syndrome, but still scared of the unknown! I just don't want to lose them to trisomy 13 or 18. Just hate the waiting and unknown. Thanks for your post xx

I've heard stories of parents being told all sorts of things that aren't necessarily true, especially in relation to Down Syndrome, so I probably jumped to conclusions!
Yes, the unknown is scary. We were told the nuchal fold could have been a number of things, and I was ok with everything as long as we didn't lose the baby. Let me know the results, and if you are blessed with a baby with Down Syndrome, there is a great online community I can get you in touch with.
