Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
Not sure about detox per se, but I had to have internal operation downstairs, which meant I had to do a 3 day bowel cleanse. I called a specialist with questions about the impact on breastfeeding, and they said it would be fine for my little one (4 months old, exclusively breastfed) but by day 3 (and for the next couple of days, as I was on fluid only for a while afterwards) my milk was so thin, it looked like cloudy water - WAY thinner than foremilk even.
I had actually expressed extra ahead of time, and so were were giving feeds of pre-pumped milk as well as the shockingly thin milk.
I wouldn't voluntarily go through something like that, if it was going to have that sort of impact on my milk.
But if it was a detox with lots of greens, fresh fish / lean chicken etc and the milk quality was still going to be good, I wouldn't have an issue - BUT I would want to find out whether a higher level of toxins get released through milk, ITMS
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
Definitely get some advice Hun - maybe check with your GP or child health nurse just to be sure.
Have you tried some natural foods to try and boost things up? I'm no expert in food or naturopath but I'm sure there are some things you could add or kick out that might help?
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
The toxins is what I am worried about, as well as the quality of milk changing.
That's a good idea op, might look into some natural health :)
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
Can go against the grain and say detoxing is a load of ****. Basically if your body can't remove toxins you have serious health problems like liver failure and kidney failure. This whole regular detox thing is a marketing tool.
You are better off just increaaing your water intake, cutting down on coffee, soft drinks . Eating better foods etc...
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
If i was breastfeeding & I wanted to get that detox-boost feeling, I would do it by adding things in, not taking things out: extra 20 mins of exercise, a fresh veggie juice each day, probiotics especially the rhamnosus one, and most of all, more sleep.
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
Oh marydean you tease....what is this elusive thing called sleep?? ;)
Is the fresh veggie juice really good as a boost? Maybe I should borrow my mums juicer....
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
If it's just about kick starting your metabolism, I was told to have the juice of half a lemon (a fresh one, not pre-packaged juice) in warm water every morning first thing, as it apparently does exactly that - kick starts your metabolism faster, and gets your digestive system awake quicker.
I actually started really liking it only after a few days, and am sad now because our lemon tree got blight, and I haven't had a fresh lemon grow in over 12 months ...
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
Detoxing is a load of bull**** designed to make fools part with their money IMO. Like TT40 said, your liver and kidneys detox your body every day. that latest fad detox thing going round is the biggest scam ever. isogenix is a pyramid scheme if that's the one all your friends are doing.
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
They aren't doing a purchased detox. Just a diet related one, like juice days, soups etc. I just wasn't sure if they would not give me enough nutrients for breastfeeding or not and if it would tax my body too much trying to exercise, detox and breastfeed.
From what I'd read from health professionals a good detox is about easing up on our kidneys and liver from bad diets. They get sluggish and stressed out and sometimes it's good to give them a rest and good flush out. Is this wrong?
Sorry I should have clarified. I've never even though of purchasing a diet related thing :o
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
Don't be sorry :) . The detox thing doing the rounds seems to be pretty big atm and there are a gazillion products on the market and it seems like every second person is doing it. I think if you kept it simple and ate whole foods and minimised processed foods then you can't go wrong. What you've read is always what I've thought about it too - that's why we don't need any scammy detox supplements because our body does it for us if we back off the crappy food.
Re: Detox and Breastfeeding
And drink heaps of water!
