Natural birth of twins!
A lot of people who are pregnant with twins are either told they can't have a vaginal birth if you have twins, but it isn't so-I did it!
I went to the Royal Women's hospital, Melbourne and they were awsome.
On the 10 October I went to the hospital for my regular check up and
happened to mention that I have had some leaking fluid but dismissed it as
I couldn't control my bladder anymore due to the weight of the babies. The
doctor said that she wanted to make sure that I hadn't ruptered my
membranes and sent me off to the emergancy department to do a test to see
if I had or not, called an Amniswab. The test came back positive that I had and was told that I would be admitted because of the risk of infection. At this time I was
34wks pregnant and I didn't want to have them that early. So off I trot
sent upstairs and put on a CTG machine (graphs the babies heart beats and
any contractions I was having). At this point I was having contractions so
they gave me medication to stop them and also steroid injections to
strengthen the babies lungs just in case the medication to stop the
contractions didn't work. After a few hours of being strapped to the
machine they admitted me to the ward and I was told that I wasn't going
home until I had the babies. Two long weeks later I was told they were
going to induce me at 36wks-the 25 October.
At 7am I was taken up to the labour ward and propped up in the room. After
being prodded and probed they started the drip to induce labour at 9am,
broke my waters properly and also put in the epidural. (The first baby was
head first and the second was breech so they were going to attempt a
natural birth that is why I had to have the epidural!) At approximately
12pm about 20 people frantically entered the room concerned that the babies
were in severe distress and they will most likely need to move me upstairs
for an emergancy ceasar. I was really upset about this but put on a brave
face. After a few minutes of stress they stopped the drip to bring on the
labour and fortunately the girls settled down. By this point I was 8cm
dialated (you need to be 10cm to start pushing) Since I had dialated so
quickly the girls were stressed. The doctors then decided it was time to
push. After approx 40min they were born. Gemma came out first with
forcepts 1.18pm and then after the doctor putting her hand up there and
literally pulling out Teagan at 1.21pm my beautiful girls were born. Gemma
2.64kgs 46cm Teagan 2.24kgs 44cm. My recovery that day was longer than
expected as I lost 1800mls of blood, apparently we have between
7000-8000mls in our body so it was a significant amount and they thought I
was going to have to have a blood transfusion, but fortunately they didn't
have to, I was just wacked out for about 5hrs and then fainted in my first
shower! LOL. After some much needed food I was feeling much better. They fortunately didn't need special care they were able to come to the ward with me straight away.
Because they are condsidered prem babies we had to stay in hospital a bit
longer than expected. Both of them lost a bit too much weight so they
wanted to make sure they were feeding properly and gaining weight. 8
emotional days later we were sent home.
gave birth to my beautiful girls,
Gemma Therese 2.64kgs and Teagan Starsha 2.25kgson the 25 October 2006.
