2yrs old and extremely constipated

Im not sure what has started this but for the last month on and off, mostly on though, Hannah has been really, really constipated. She cries for hours before she does a poo and when they "arrive" they are really big and very, very hard. Im constantly making her drink water and she gets a lot of fruit and veg so I think I have that side of things covered. PLus her diet hasnt changed in the last months so I dont think it could be related to that. I took her to the nurse and they gave her Duphulac which does help but if I stop for a day we are back to square one.

Im pretty desperate coz I hate to see my lovley girl so unhappy - does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing it or what I can try to help her. I want to get away from the Duphalac ASAP.

I was told to put 1/2 tsp of brown sugar to 120mls of water and that seems to of helped my son.

thanks Missy. I have tried that with Hannah when she was much younger but Im not sure whether it would work now - Im sure she would love me giving her sugar water to drink!!!

When Mackenzie is constipated I use Coloxyl (I think thats how you spell it). Mum used it on my brother when he was young and he's now 43! It works for Mackenzie so it may be worth giving it a go.

We use Duphalac in animals and some animals are on it all the time, but its not common. Most of the time they are on a "course" which may last 10 days or so. HTH

We use Actilax too, but thankfully after years of constipation we are finally getting some musshy poos. My paed told me..after I freaked about having to give her a dose daily that keeping the poos soft and passable without stretching the bowel is a far better way to go than stopping the med's. But then again he also told me when she went on to solids that it would get better and it got worse.
I'd get a referal to a specialist just to have a chat

Definately PARACHOC is the go but watch you dont give her too much other wise they can have alittle oily discharge...if this happens just cut back on the dose...my little girl was like this for nearly 6 months at around 16 months onwards it was just heart breaking to watch. we even had a few visits to the hospital for enemas. she too had a good diet and only still drinks water.
but now at nearly four we have not had a drama our doct said its quite common for kids under 5 to get constipated...my nephew did after eating coconut!
